After a week hiatus, La Liga returns this weekend for week 4 of the 2020-21 season as the post-Messi era drags on and their ESPN contract runs into the start of the NFL season. With fewer eyeballs, even more opportunities could exist for those willing to dig deep enough week to week.
Let’s look at one matchup this week I have my eye on.

Espanyol vs. Atletico Madrid, 3:00 PM EST
After winning La Liga 2 last season, Espanyol joined the La Liga ranks this season as one of two teams (Mallorca) promoted to the “big leagues” of Spanish soccer. This, of course, just one season following a dead-last finish in La Liga that got them there in the first place.
Through the first three weeks of their redemption tour this season, Espanyol has seen mixed results, scoring just one goal but sitting with two points following two 0-0 draws over their last two.
The road gets no easier this week as the newly promoted team now must face 20-21 champion Atletico Madrid who comes into this match third in the table, still looking for that statement win. After a 2-2 draw to open the season, they’ve squeaked by the lesser Elche CF ad Celta Vigo, as they look to capitalize on the teams they are superior to early before other schedule picks up later.
With a Champions League match looming against FC Porto on Wednesday, Atletico likely looks at this one as a warm-up match and puts their best foot forward. Led by one of the best strikers in the league Angel Correa, who already has three goals through three games, I look for Atletico to slot one in early and largely play their top reserves as the game drags on; in preparation for their big match vs. Porto in the coming week.
Pick: Atletico Madrid -110
