Mets jump from -140 to -150 against the Padres

by Mike Spector | Mets Team Correspondent |
Thu, Oct 6th 8:44pm ET

The New York Mets have been bet up from -140 to -150 moneyline favorites in Game 1 of the Wild Card round against the San Diego Padres... View More

Betting Impact:

The Mets are just 3-5 in Max Scherzer's (11-5, 2.29) previous eight starts, but the team has provided him with just six total runs of support in those losses. However, New York has played much better than San Diego against elite competition, going 45-37 (.549) against teams over .500, while the Padres were 38-44 (.463). Though the Mets scored just seven total runs in their most meaningful series to this point in Atlanta last weekend, that should not overshadow the fact that they finished fourth in wRC+ and sixth in wOBA. Those numbers are even better against right-handed pitchers like Yu Darvish (16-8, 3.10), who the Mets will face in Game 1, as they finished second and third in wRC+ and wOBA, respectively. Darvish won six of seven starts to end the regular season, but his road ERA (3.50) is almost an entire run higher than his home ERA (2.60).

Mariners look for continued success against the Blue Jays

by Mike Spector | Mariners Team Correspondent |
Thu, Oct 6th 8:42pm ET

The Seattle Mariners went 5-2 head-to-head in the regular season against the Toronto Blue Jays, and look to continue that success on the road in Game 1 of the Wild Card round... View More

Betting Impact:

The Blue Jays are -130 moneyline favorites. Alek Manoah (16-7, 2.24) is 12-4 with a 2.38 ERA in 24 career starts at the Rogers Centre. He enters the playoffs on fire, as his 0.88 ERA in September was the lowest ERA by a pitcher (minimum five starts) in any month in team history. In addition, his 2.24 ERA to end the regular season is the second-lowest in franchise history. As hot as Manoah is, Toronto's offense is equally in a groove, as it ranks second in wRC+ and wOBA over the last 30 days. Seattle's Luis Castillo (8-6, 2.99) was acquired from Cincinnati for big moments like this, and he has allowed one earned run in his last 26 innings against teams with a winning record. However, just one of those four starts came on the road.

Phillies-Cardinals matchup is a virtual pick'em

by Mike Spector | Phillies Team Correspondent |
Thu, Oct 6th 8:41pm ET

Game 1 of the Wild Card round series between the Philadelphia Phillies and St. Louis Cardinals is a virtual pick'em, as each team has -110 moneyline odds... View More

Betting Impact:

The pitching matchup is between Zack Wheeler (12-7, 2.82 ERA) and Jose Quintana (6-7, 2.93). Wheeler finished the regular season with a .632 winning percentage, which is tied for the highest of his career (excluding the 2020 shortened season). Wheeler spent a month on the IL with forearm tendinitis before making three starts since September 21. Quintana was acquired from the Pirates for situations like this, as Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol trusts the veteran southpaw to take the mound in Game 1. Since coming over from Pittsburgh, Quintana has posted a 2.01 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and a 3:1 K:BB ratio in 12 starts for St. Louis. Though he has averaged just over five innings over his last seven starts (38 total IP), Quintana has dropped just one decision while pitching to a minuscule 1.18 ERA.

Rays look to end losing streak in Game 1 of playoffs against the Guardians

by Mike Spector | Rays Team Correspondent |
Thu, Oct 6th 8:38pm ET

No team limped into the playoffs like the Tampa Bay Rays, whose five-game losing streak to end the regular season was tied with Washington's for the longest active streak in the majors. They look to end that losing streak in Game 1 of the Wild Card round against the Cleveland Guardians... View More

Betting Impact:

The Guardians are -120 moneyline favorites. Shane McClanahan (12-8, 2.54) finished his second full season with another double-digit K/9 rate (10.5). While Cleveland ranks second in BABIP (.316) in that span, the Guardians played three games against teams over .500. That was a home series against the Rays, where Cleveland took two out of three games, with each decided by one run. Cleveland's Shane Bieber was lit up for seven runs in 4.2 innings by the Yankees in his only postseason start. The Rays are 4-0 in their last four games following an off day and have won each of their previous four Wild Card games

by Mike Spector | Dodgers Team Correspondent |
Wed, Oct 5th 8:46am ET

The Colorado Rockies have beaten the Los Angeles Dodgers in three straight games, and look for a fourth straight to end the regular season... View More

Betting Impact:

The Dodgers have been listed as -315 moneyline favorites despite neither team's starting pitching plans being finalized. The Rockies are 8-10 against the Dodgers this season, and those eight wins are the most by any NL West team against Los Angeles. The under is 6-2 in the last eight meetings between these teams, and is 10-2-1 in their last 13 in Los Angeles.

Twins and White Sox vie for season series vicotry

by Mike Spector | Twins Team Correspondent |
Wed, Oct 5th 8:42am ET

The Minnesota Twins and Chicago White Sox have split their 18 head-to-head meetings, and each looks to claim the season series victory with a win this afternoon... View More

Betting Impact:

The White Sox are -120 moneyline favorites. The White Sox had much loftier ambitions than entering the last day of the regular season one game over .500 and eliminated from playoff contention. While their game against the Twins is meaningless in terms of the postseason picture, both teams will be interested to see what their young pitchers do on the mound and evaluate if they can be key pieces in next year's starting rotation. That pitching matchup is between Chicago's Davis Martin (3-5, 3.65) and Minnesota's Louie Varland (0-2, 4.71). The Twins have had much worse success against right-handed starting pitchers (50-61) than southpaws (27-22). The White Sox have won three of Martin's last four starts, including when he held Minnesota scoreless over five innings on three hits in a 4-3 win on September 2. Martin has done a great job keeping the leadoff man off the basepaths, retiring the leadoff hitter in his previous ten innings.

The Cincinnati Reds have won back-to-back games against the Chicago Cubs, and look to end the regular season with a home sweep of their NL Central rivals... View More

Betting Impact:

The Cubs are -125 moneyline road favorites. Today's pitching matchup is between Adrian Sampson (4-5, 3.10) and Graham Ashcraft (5-5, 4.52). Sampson has allowed two or fewer runs in six straight starts, and eight of his last nine, while pitching to a 2.23 ERA. Ashcraft was tagged for six runs in 2.23 innings the last time he faced the Cubs. Chicago owns a slim 10-8 head-to-head season series lead over Cincinnati.

Betting Impact:

The Rays are -115 moneyline road favorites. Today's pitching matchup is between Josh Fleming (2-4, 6.23) and Nick Pivetta (10-12, 4.56). Despite Tampa Bay's losing streak, it is still 14-5 in its last 19 against teams with a losing record, while Boston has won four of its last five home meetings against the Rays. Royals and Guardians bring over streak into today's matchup

by Mike Spector | Guardians Team Correspondent |
Tue, Oct 4th 6:26am ET

The over is 4-0 in the last four meetings in Cleveland between the Guardians and Kansas City Royals... View More

Betting Impact:

The Royals-Guardians O/U is 7.5 runs. Today’s pitching matchup is between Daniel Lynch (4-12, 4.96) and Cal Quantrill (14-5, 3.42). Quantrill has one more chance this regular season to match a record set 67 years ago. Quantrill is 13-0 with a 2.91 ERA in 43 appearances (33 starts) at Progressive Field in his career. If he earns a win tonight, he will tie Vic Raschi's 14-0 record at Comiskey Park from 1947-55 for most wins at one park without a loss. Quantrill has allowed a .235 OBA in his 18 home starts this season. The Guardians are 15-1 in Quantrill's last 16 starts overall, covering the runline in 11. Cleveland entered yesterday's game against Kansas City with 1,104 strikeouts in 6,045 plate appearances (18% K rate), the best in baseball. It will put plenty of balls in play against Daniel Lynch (4-12, 4.96), and those balls figure to be smashed, as Lynch ranks in the 2nd percentile in average exit velocity allowed and in the first percentile in hard-hit percentage.

Mariners look to stay perfect against the Tigers this season

by Mike Spector | Mariners Team Correspondent |
Mon, Oct 3rd 8:24am ET

The Seattle Mariners swept a three-game road series against the Detroit Tigers earlier this season, and look to stay perfect against them in tonight's home series opener... View More

Betting Impact:

The Mariners are -245 moneyline favorites. Mariners rookie George Kirby (8-4, 3.21) has only lost once in his previous 14 starts and has pitched to a 2.55 ERA in his last seven. In his only career start against Detroit, he held the Tigers scoreless over five innings and allowed just two hits while striking out five. Kirby is backed up by a bullpen that has pitched to a 3.31 ERA in the last 30 days and has allowed hard contact on just 26.9% of batted balls, well better than the league average. In that same span, the Mariners have batted just .217 as a team and face Bryan Garcia (1-0, 3.29), who has looked comfortable in his first three outings despite facing all playoff teams. He is coming off his first quality start.

Angels look for eighth straight win when facing the Athletics

by Mike Spector | Angels Team Correspondent |
Mon, Oct 3rd 8:22am ET

One of these teams is playing its best baseball down the stretch, while the other seemingly cannot wait for the season to end. The Los Angeles Angels have outscored opponents by 22 runs during a seven-game winning streak that is tied with the Cubs for the longest active winning streak in the majors. Meanwhile, the Oakland Athletics are 1-6 in their last seven games, and scored 12 runs total in the six losses. That streak includes being swept by the Angels in three games on the road last week, where Oakland totaled just six runs... View More

Betting Impact:

The Angels are -175 moneyline road favorites. The A's are batting just .161 and slugging .242 over the last seven days, with a .209 BABIP and microscopic .081 ISO. Thus, Los Angeles's Patrick Sandoval (6-9, 3.03) has a good chance to improve his 2.11 ERA over his previous seven starts. In addition, his ERA, WHIP, OBA, and HR/9 ratio are all better on the road, and all trends point to him limiting this porous Oakland offense again. The A's counter with Adrian Martinez (4-6, 6.08).

Mon, Oct 3rd 6:20am ET

The Atlanta Braves' magic number to clinch the NL East division title is down to one, and they would sew things up with a win over the Miami Marlins (or a Mets loss to the Nationals)... View More

Betting Impact:

The Braves are -150 moneyline favorites. Miami has been a bettor's delight when Jesus Luzardo (3-7, 3.53) has toed the rubber, as the team is 3-14 in his 17 starts this season. That includes nine straight losses and 12 of 13. Yet, miraculously, bettors have not profited off the opposition's runlines in those games, and six of Miami's last eight losses when Luzardo has toed the rubber have been by one run. Atlanta's Bryce Elder (2-3, 2.76) faced the Marlins in consecutive starts in mid-August and early September and limited them to one run on five hits and 16 strikeouts in 13 combined innings. Guardians look to clinch season series against the Royals

by Mike Spector | Guardians Team Correspondent |
Sun, Oct 2nd 8:36am ET

The Cleveland Guardians are 9-6 head-to-head against the Kansas City Royals, and look to clinch the season series with a victory today... View More

Betting Impact:

The Guardians are -225 moneyline favorites. Today's pitching matchup is between Max Castillo (0-1, 4.98) and Shane Bieber (12-8, 2.91). Bieber has had great success against current Royals hitters, holding them to a .200/.269/.267 slash line. Kansas City snapped a four-game losing streak with last night's 7-1 win over Cleveland, but it was the first time it scored more than three runs in the previous five games. We look for the Royals offense to struggle against Bieber, who has a microscopic 0.69 BB/9 rate over the last 30 days, and whose 2.78 xFIP compared to his 3.49 FIP in that span suggests he is due for positive regression on already impressive numbers. Castillo has not pitched five innings in any of his previous three starts. That includes his last start, where he was removed before recording a single out against the 64-win Tigers. Five of Kansas City's last eight losses have come by one run.

Sun, Oct 2nd 8:30am ET

The Philadelphia Phillies are 15-3 against the Washington Nationals this year after splitting yesterday's doubleheader, and look to clinch another series victory against their NL East counterparts today... View More

Betting Impact:

The Phillies are -240 moneyline favorites. Patrick Corbin (6-18, 6.08) is ready to go for this start after leaving his previous outing with back spasms after 12 pitches. However, before that start, Corbin had allowed one earned run or fewer in three of his last four appearances, with two of the three against teams that will finish over .500 this year. Meanwhile, Philadelphia's Zack Wheeler (11-7, 2.92) has made quality starts in four of his previous six road appearances and looks to limit a Nationals team that has scored just 28 runs over the last 14 days while slashing .214/.268/.324. Wheeler has made 11 starts against teams currently under .500 and has allowed two or fewer earned runs in each of the previous ten. He has only faced the Nationals once this year, limiting them to one run over seven innings. The Under is 9-3-2 in Washington's last 14 games.
