10 Super Bowl LVI Betting Mistakes to Avoid (2022)

We’re just outside of a week away from the kickoff of Super Bowl LVI, and bettors have already begun getting their action down. Let’s take a look at the top things to avoid when getting down your wagers.

1. Waiting to Bet Until Next Week

The betting actioned (Rams -4, O/U 50) opened within hours following the NFC Championship game Sunday night and almost immediately started seeing action. While those numbers held for a day or two, we already see movement to the Rams and the Under (-4.5, O/U 48.5).

If you like either, I wouldn’t wait much longer.

2. Betting a Dozen Prop Bets

As many know, there is no shortage of prop bets for Super Bowl Betting. Everything from the National Anthem, to in-game props, to the Gatorade shower color is available.

Choose wisely and intentionally.

3.  Listening to Too Much Coverage

Whether it be ESPN, Fox Sports, or the general news, everyone and everybody will be covering this game starting Sunday. So form your own opinions based on your research and avoid the mainstream narratives.

Look to be contrarian where available.

4. Betting Massive Parlays

This is a good rule for betting in general, but the truth is that parlays are rarely winning propositions, especially when you involve 3+ bets. So avoid the temptation to cash in on +50000 payouts with less than a 1% chance of hitting.

5. Discounting Experience

Sure, the size of the field is the same, and there are still four quarters and 60 minutes. But this is not just another game.

Look for angles with players (and coaches) who have experience here and know what to expect the week of and pregame.

6. Only Betting at One Sportsbook

Especially when it comes to props, different books will have slightly different numbers posted. So make sure you have multiple outlets to shop around.

7. Waiting Until You’ve Had A Few Sunday Afternoon to Bet

Anyone who drinks alcohol and engages in betting will know precisely what I mean by this. No further explanation is needed.

8. Super Bowl Squares

I will likely be involved in square pool, but make no mistake; this is not the same as sports betting. While you have ~50% of winning a spread/total bet, your chances are less than 10% in square betting unless you land a key number, which at best gives you a 21% chance.

9. Making Disproportianate Size Bets

Just because this is a big game doesn’t mean you need to bet big. Keep your unit size the same as you have all season.

10. Not Sprinkling the Money Line (if You Like the Bengals)

If you like the Bengals against the spread, sprinkle some on the money line as well. Looking at the last three underdogs to win the Super Bowl ATS, they also won outright.
