2020 RBC Heritage Betting Guide (PGA Tour)

PGA fans were treated to an exciting finish on Sunday at the Charles Schwab Challenge. Daniel Berger and Collin Morikawa were tied at 15-under par after 72 holes and were forced to play a playoff hole. Berger got the job done to claim his fourth-career PGA title. This was Berger’s first win since 2017, and it was great to see him back in the winner’s circle.

The Tour now heads to South Carolina for the RBC Heritage at Hilton Head. We’ve got a stacked field once again this week. Rory McIlroy (+1200), Bryson DeChambeau (+1400), Justin Thomas (+1600), Jon Rahm (+1800), and Xander Schauffele (+2000) headline the list of 155 golfers. C.T. Pan will attempt to defend his title, but he’ll have his work cut out for him, as this might be the strongest field that the RBC Heritage has ever seen.

Course Preview

The RBC Heritage will be played at Harbour Town Golf Links in South Carolina. One of the shortest courses on Tour, Harbour Town measures at just 7,099 yards. Instead of bentgrass, golfers will play on Bermuda greens this week. Similar to Colonial, the fairways here are narrow and tree-lined. Position off the tee will be pivotal for golfers to have the right angle into the greens. The course is a Pete Dye design that forces golfer into plenty of blind approach shots.

One thing to remember this week is that the wind can be a huge factor. The course is situated on Hilton Head Island, so the coastal breeze can have a great effect on the scoring conditions. This is something to keep in mind when considering your player pool and while stacking tee times if you’re playing showdown. Also, the players’ game around the green will be crucial with the small greens.

Betting Outrights

Bryson DeChambeau (+1400)
DeChambeau picked up right where he left off prior to the shutdown. He fired two 65’s in his first rounds back at the Charles Schwab Challenge last week, but unfortunately, he got cold with the putter and settled for a T3 finish. DeChambeau led the entire field in both strokes gained: tee-to-green, and strokes gained: off-the-tee. This third-place finish marks DeChambeau’s fourth consecutive top-five finish. He’s playing the best golf of his career right now, and the added distance off the tee is a massive advantage over the field.

In DeChambeau’s last four times out at this event, he has a third and fourth-place finish. He excels on shorter courses designed by Pete Dye. His current form mixed with his solid course history is simply too much to pass on this week. DeChambeau was only one stroke off the lead this week, and he should still be highly motivated to get back in the winner’s circle.

Justin Rose (+3500)
This is a very solid number for the world’s former number one golfer who appears to be back. Before the coronavirus shutdown, Rose had two consecutive missed cuts and looked out of sorts. He used the break to reset, and he’s since switched back to his old irons. Rose opened up the Charles Schwab with a seven-under round of 63. He finished at 14-under par and only one stroke off the lead by the end. In his final round, Rose was second in strokes gained: tee-to-green, and he came super close to forcing a playoff.

Rose now goes to a course where he has zero course history, but the course is another short tree-lined layout that should suit his eye. According to Fantasy National, when sorted by the last 50 rounds played on Pete Dye’s courses with Bermuda greens, Rose ranks third in strokes gained: tee-to-green. This bodes well for Rose’s chances at Harbour Town.

Matt Kuchar (+4000)
Kuchar has the best course history at Harbour Town Golf Links. The Pete Dye wizard hasn’t missed a cut at this event, and he has three top-10s in the last five years. Also, this includes a runner-up finish in 2019. His accuracy off the tee will allow him to plot himself around this short tree-lined course and set himself up for plenty of good looks with his irons. Kuchar ranks second in strokes gained: tee-to-green in the last 50 rounds when sorted by Pete Dye’s courses with Bermuda greens. Expect a bounce-back outing from “Kuch” this week.

Best Top-10 Bets

Kevin Kisner (+550)
Kisner cruised to a solid T29 finish last week at the Charles Schwab Challenge while losing strokes putting. This is uncharacteristic of one of the game’s best putters, and I expect him to bounce back on the greens this week. He now goes to an even shorter golf course where he’s had plenty of success. Kisner has three top-15 finishes here, including a runner-up showing in 2015. It’s the perfect setup for another good outing for the world’s 37th ranked player.

Ian Poulter (+550)
The Englishman is another accurate, short hitter who thrives on Pete Dye’s courses. It’s no coincidence that he has put together three-straight excellent showings at Harbour Town Golf Links. In his last three times teeing it up at the RBC Heritage, Poulter has a 10th, 7th, and 11th place finishes. With a T29 outing at the Charles Schwab last week, Poulter proved that he is in good enough form to once again score well at Harbour Town.
