2022 Charles Schwab Challenge: Betting Guide, Odds, Picks & Predictions (PGA)

One week removed from the second Major (PGA Championship) of the year, this week’s Charles Schwab Challenge marks us just three weeks away (US Open) from the next. Between now and then, the Tours best will sharpen their tools starting here at the Charles Schwab Challenge; a very scorable course.

Let’s take a closer look at the course and field at large, and see where the value remains.

Course Preview: Colonial Country Club

Located just outside of Fort Worth, Texas, Colonial is a standard 7,200-yard course, coming in as a Par 70 with a 2021 scoring average of 70.2. The greens of choice will be bentgrass, while the rough surrounding them is Bermuda rough; which is worth noting as some of the most difficult on Tour.

It’s also worth noting that Colonial features dog-legs on almost every non-Par 3, which leaves approach shots critical for success here. Having been in the Tour rotation since 1946, Colonial is one of the most traveled courses these guys have seen throughout their career which leaves plenty of prior laps to draw on.

Outright Betting Picks

Abraham Ancer (+4000 on DraftKings Sportsbook)
The previous three winners here have all been priced at +5000 or above, and that’s the neighborhood where we’re heading with this one.  In contention late at the PGA Championship before finishing with a Sunday 73 aft, Ancer finished T9 in his best Major finish of the season.

Following what has been a rocky start to the season, Ancer finally seemed to get his game off the tee going. When that plus his mid-irons are clicking, his ball-striking is second to none. Coming into the week, Ancer is #3 on Tour in Driving Accuracy at 70.45%, a metric critical for success here at Colonial.

In his four starts here at Colonial, he is 4 for 4 in made cuts, coming into this year with consecutive T14 finishes in 2020 and 2021. Over those 8 rounds, Ancer has finished below par in 67% of them, shooting an opening-round 64 in 2020 to lead the field in the first round.

If he can turn in another strong start, which I expect after a strong showing last week at the PGA Championship, look for Ancer to be lingering late and be in contention for his second career PGA Tour win.
