2022 French Open: Top Odds, Picks, & Predictions

History was made on the Men’s side at the Australian Open earlier this season, as Rafael Nadal defeated Daniil Medvedev for his 21st Grand Slam title. That broke a three-way tie that he was previously a part of with Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, who each have won 20 career Grand Slams.

The second major of the tennis season is the French Open at Roland Garros, which will run from May 22nd to June 5th. The clay surface is difficult for even the best of players to adapt to, as evidenced by the fact that just three of Federer’s and Djokovic’s combined 40 Grand Slam titles have been won at Roland Garros. Even Pete Sampras, who ranks fourth on the all-time list of Grand Slam champions, never won a French Open title.

This is the first annual BettingPros Guide to the French Open, where we will highlight several of the top contenders from both the Men’s and Women’s Draws.

Is Rafael Nadal a shoo-in for his 14th French Open title, which would be five more than any other player won at any Grand Slam event? Will we have our ninth different women’s champion in the last nine years? Or can Barbora Krejcikova become the first repeat champion since Justine Henin’s three-peat from 2005-07?

Nadal Not to Win (-800 on DraftKings)

Just three Men’s players other than Nadal have won the French Open since 2005, so the Spaniard’s dominance of this tournament is remarkable. However, how does a player who has dominated this tournament for so long get rewarded? By being placed in the same quarter as world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, the two are on a collision course to meet in the quarterfinals.

Nadal is 105-3 in his career at the French Open, but two of those losses have been to Djokovic. With his health in serious question, we give the upper hand to Djokovic in their likely eventual quarterfinal meeting, which means Nadal will not even make it out of his quarter.

Carlos Alcaraz Garfia to Reach the Final (+120 at FanDuel)

Did Alcaraz’s win in the quarterfinals in Madrid over Nadal signal a passing of the torch from one Spaniard to another? Will the 19-year-old begin his reign as the next dominant champion on clay?

Alcaraz is a bit of a wild card entering the French Open, as he has never before reached the second week of a Grand Slam. However, he is 16-1 on clay this year and is confident after beating Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal in Madrid. He got a great draw by avoiding Djokovic and Nadal until the finals, and we expect him to meet one of them there in the deepest Grand Slam run of his young career.

Novak Djokovic to Win (+200 via BetMGM)

Djokovic went from the third-best odds to win the French Open behind Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz to being the favorite or, at worst, co-favorite at most sportsbooks. However, his win in Rome changed his outlook on his chances at Roland Garros tremendously, as did Rafael Nadal’s foot injury he suffered in his last tournament.

Djokovic and Nadal are on a collision course to meet in the quarterfinals, so just to reach the semifinals is an arduous task for Djokovic. Had Nadal been 100% healthy entering this Grand Slam, there would have been no way we could fade the Spaniard. But given so many question marks surrounding his health, we expect Djokovic to beat Nadal for the third time in his career at Roland Garros and eventually go on to his record-tying 21st career Grand Slam title.

Stefanos Tsitsipas Men’s Quarter 3 Winner (-140 via FanDuel)

Tsitsipas was just one set away from winning at Roland Garros last year, which will likely fuel him entering this year’s French Open. There is little doubt that the Greek is the favorite in his quarter, with Casper Ruud (+310) the only other challenger with shorter than +1600 odds to reach the semifinals. However, winning the quarter is as far as we are willing to take Tsitsipas, especially since a player like Carlos Alcaraz has defeated him three times this calendar year.

If you like Tsitsipas’ draw once he reaches the semifinals, you could get involved with backing his moneyline odds with in-tournament wagers. However, the safest bet, for now, is just to back him to reach the semifinals.
