2022 Memorial Tournament: Betting Guide, Odds, & Predictions (PGA)

Sam Burns took home the Charles Schwab Challenge on Sunday, with the week’s results being decided by a playoff for a second straight week as he knocked off world #1 Scottie Scheffler. Following three consecutive weeks of playing in either Texas or Oklahoma, the Tour now heads to Ohio for one of the season’s more popular tournaments: the Memorial at Muirfield Village Golf Club.

Designed by Jack Nicklaus, this year features another stacked field scheduled to come out and play The Bears course. With the third major (US Open) of the year just a few weeks away, let’s take a look at this week’s course, field, and one player I’m keyed in on that has some value as the weekend approaches.

Course Preview: Muirfield Village Golf Club

Having hosted the Memorial Tournament since 1976, Muirfield was designed by Nicklaus and opened officially in 1974. Muirfield Village is not your typical golf club, as it is also home to a neighborhood centered around the club, one of the wealthiest in all of Ohio.

As for the course itself, Muirfield plays well above the Tour’s average, coming in at 7,543 while still being the stock Par 72. The greens covered in Bentgrass are smaller than average and largely take the long iron play out of the equation to hold the greens. It’s also worth noting the rough is thicker than the Tour’s average, making the player’s approach that much more critical.

Outright Betting Picks

Matt Fitzpatrick (+2500 on DraftKings Sportsbook)
Fitzpatrick is quietly turning into one of the most consistent players on Tour each week and, in my opinion, also one of the most due players to pick up their first official win. Having won seven times internationally, Fitzpatrick comes into this event with 21 career top 10s, with this season being his best yet; and only improving.

Looking back at his last two months, Fitz has finished inside the top 5 three times, including a T2 at the Wells Fargo two weeks ago. And his metrics back up those results.

As of this week, Fitzpatrick ranks inside the top 5 on Tour in SG: Total (#1), SG: Tee-to-Green, SG: Scoring Average, and SG: Scrambling. He also performs well (top 10) on Par 5s, critical for success here at Muirfield.

Add in three made cuts in his past four appearances and a solo 3rd place in 2020, and I like for Fitzpatrick to once again be lurking near the top come Sunday in Ohio.
