2022 U.S. Open Bets: Head-to-Head Matchups Odds & Picks
Our third major of the 2022 PGA season is upon us as the U.S. Open will get underway on Thursday. This year, The Country Club at Brookline in Massachusetts is hosting the event for the first time since 1988.
This course is famous for various reasons, whether for being the oldest country club in the United States or the place where amateur Francis Ouimet (you may know him from the movie The Greatest Game Ever Played) won the U.S. Open in 1913. In this year’s version of the U.S. Open, the rough is as thick as it has ever been on tour, which will benefit the younger/stronger players on TOUR.
Additionally, finding greens will be essential to success as they are small, and life will be difficult if you spend the entire round scrambling. That being said, we will look at greens in regulation percentage and birdie percentage from the rough to narrow down our best bets for this tournament.
Below, I walk through my two best bets for head-to-head matchups at the 2022 U.S. Open. All plays below are one unit each, or 1% of your betting bankroll.

Sam Burns Over Viktor Hovland (-130)
As one of the hottest golfers on TOUR, Sam Burns is getting great value in this matchup. Burns has made the cut in seven of his last nine tournaments and has two victories plus five top-10 finishes during that stretch.
This course should fit Burns’ style well as he ranks fifth on TOUR in greens in regulation percentage. Burns’ strength and athleticism should also benefit him when hitting in the thick rough, something he has a clear-cut advantage over Viktor Hovland.
On TOUR this season, Hovland ranks just 86th in birdies or better percentage from the rough and 66th in greens in regulation percentage. Burns is coming off a top-20 finish in his latest major championship, while Hovland has not finished inside that position in either of his last two majors.
Talor Gooch Over Tyrrell Hatton (-130)
I believe Talor Gooch is getting great value in this matchup due to his recent play in the rival LIV tournament. While Gooch has changed allegiances of the league he plays for, that does not wipe out his success on TOUR before departing.
On TOUR this season, Gooch ranks 35th in birdie or better percentage from the rough and 20th in greens in regulation percentage. Meanwhile, Hatton ranks just 195th on TOUR in greens in regulation percentage, which could cost him big at a course where the small greens will be especially difficult to hit.
Additionally, Hatton has struggled on bigger stages recently as he has missed the cut in five of his last seven major championships (57%). Conversely, Gooch has made the cut in five of his six major championship appearances (83%).
