On the Women’s side, there has been much more parity, as Wimbledon has crowned a different champion each of the last five years. The closest thing to dominance in that span has been Serena Williams, who has won three titles and finished runner-up on two other occasions. However, there has been an overall dominant force on the WTA for the last several months, as Iga Swiatek has won 35 consecutive matches, tying Venus Williams’ mark for the longest consecutive match winning streak by a woman in this century.
The Women’s Draw received a big jolt with the inclusion of Serena Williams, who will play her first tournament in 12 months. However, there are also notable absences, such as Aryna Sabalenka, Daria Kasatkina, Victoria Azarenka, and Ekaterina Alexandrova, as Wimbledon has banned all players from Russia and Belarus due to the ongoing war in the Ukraine. And most-recently, Naomi Osaka announced she would miss Wimbledon because of an Achilles injury. However, she was also critical of Wimbledon feeling like an exhibition this year as the tournament temporarily did away with ranking points.

The Pick: The Field vs. Swiatek and Gauff to Win (-150 on FanDuel)
Swiatek’s +160 pre-tournament odds are very similar to the +150 odds she had to win the French Open. However, those odds on clay were much easier to back, given her clay-court dominance in the tune-up tournaments leading up to Roland Garros. Swiatek has been on another level during a 35-match winning streak, but she has not done much on grass as a professional to prove she is worthy of being a colossal favorite at Wimbledon.
Even Swiatek’s coach, Tomasz Wiktorowski, acknowledged the obstacles his player will face on grass, saying, “She has the best kick-serve in the world, but it doesn’t always work on grass. So if we lose here, we have to add something else.†Swiatek’s stiffest competition in her quarter should come from Jessica Pegula, whom she beat 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the French Open. Swiatek also has 2017 champion Garbine Muguruza in her quarter, but she should not have too much difficulty reaching the semifinals. It is there or beyond that we expect Swiatek to get tripped up, and oddsmakers have also tipped their hands, favoring the field over Swiatek or Coco Gauff to win.
