2023 NFL Preseason Odds & Picks: Thursday
Here are our top picks and predictions for Thursday’s NFL preseason action.
Texans vs. Patriots
Week 1 of the preseason will get underway, with the Texans facing the Patriots on Thursday night. C.J. Stroud will get the start and be followed by Davis Mills. Stroud is the second overall pick and frontrunner to win the NFL Rookie of the Year. Meanwhile, Mills has solid experience in the NFL and still has the potential to do big things in the league for years to come. You'd also have to imagine that John Metchie III gets some work, at least to start the game, so that he can get a feel for the NFL level of competition. Meanwhile, the Patriots will likely ride with Bailey Zappe to begin the game. Zappe earned snaps last season for the Patriots when they benched Mac Jones. He’ll be fun. However, in the second half, it’ll be Trace McSorley and Malik Cunningham. Cunningham is a terrific athlete, but I'm unsure if his success will translate at the NFL level. Give me the Texans in the opener.
Pick: Texans -3.5 (-110)
Vikings vs. Seahawks
Many questions surround the Vikings heading into their preseason opener against the Seahawks. They'll likely give Nick Mullins the keys to begin the game and then allow Jaren Hall to play in the second half. Meanwhile, the offensive line could be filled with rookies in the second half. That wouldn't help Hall at all. On the other hand, the Seahawks will give Drew Lock another opportunity under center. Lock was never a reliable quarterback in the NFL. But preseason is different. Lock has been more shifty in practice and could overwhelm the Minnesota defense. Seattle will like to settle with Holton Ahlers in the second half. He's able to make decisive decisions and protect the ball. Seattle's rookie running back Zach Charbonnet could also be a heavy game-changer. However, it's unclear if he'll be ready to take the field after a groin injury. Take the Seahawks to get the win.
Pick: Seahawks -3.5 (-110)
