2023 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play Betting Preview, Predictions & Top Pick

Scottie Scheffler, the current world No. 1 and defending PLAYERS champion, will compete this week in the 2023 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play alongside other top PGA Tour players. Scheffler claimed the world’s top position with his PLAYERS triumphs two weeks ago after winning the Phoenix Open for the second consecutive year in February.

The 2023 WGC-Match Play field, which consists of 64 of the best PGA Tour golfers, will begin play on Wednesday at the Austin Country Club. Eight of the top nine golfers in the world, including top-five players Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm, are scheduled to compete.

Two weeks before winning his first Major Championship at the Masters, Scheffler defeated Kevin Kisner in the event’s final four and three, starting what would be a historic run for the University of Texas alum.

Can Scheffler repeat again? Or does someone else on the odds board present more value? Let’s take a closer look.

Course Preview: Austin Country Club

Legendary golf course designer Pete Dye created Austin Country Club in 1984, and the classic Dye design resembles a lot of his earlier creations. It is a par-71 course that measures just 7,108 yards in length and is distinguished by its strategic and positional elements.

The golf course underwent a significant refurbishment to be ready for the 2016 event. The Poa Trivialis over-seed that we have become familiar with over the past few weeks at TPC Sawgrass and Innisbrook was used to re-lay the greens.

The match-play course at Austin Country Club shines with multiple risk/reward holes, a good balance of reachable par fours and fives and difficult par threes. Generating birdie opportunities is the name of the game in any match-play style, so I’ll especially be on the lookout for players who score strongly in both categories.

Outright Betting Pick: Collin Morikawa (+2800

The World No. 11 recently finished 13th at THE PLAYERS Championship, as Morikawa’s irons were back to the best levels he has seen this season. The 25-year-old had his best iron week since winning the WGC Workday Tournament with a gain of 9.4 strokes on the approach at TPC Sawgrass. It’s encouraging to see that Morikawa has his best tool back. In six starts this year, he has already finished in the top three on three separate occasions.

At this price, I think there’s plenty of value on Morikawa to go low here at Austin Country Club.
