2024 British Open Longshot Odds, Picks, & Predictions
The fourth and final major of the PGA Tour season is hours away from teeing off at Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland. Playing as a par 71 at over 7,300 yards, this links course will return as the host site for the British Open for the first time since 2016.
All of the PGA Tour and LIV Golf’s biggest stars are set to compete in this field, with Scottie Scheffler as the outright betting favorite once again at +450 odds. Scheffler has won six events this year, including a major title at The Masters, although he’s yet to record a top-five finish at a British Open event since his debut at Royal St. George’s in 2021.
In this article, we’re recommending three golfers with longshot odds to bet ahead of Round 1 at Royal Troon, with first groups teeing off as early as 1:#5 a.m. ET. Follow me on X at Matt_MacKay_ for more free bets and weekly analysis.
2024 British Open: Best Longshot Bets
These plays are .25u and .10 u, or 0.25% and 0.10% of your betting bankroll. Odds used exclusively from FanDuel Sportsbook.
Wyndham Clark (+6500)
Wyndham Clark is a popular golfer this week at Royal Troon but it’s not based on his past outings at British Open majors. Clark’s been quietly posting top-ten finishes in his last two events, including at the Scottish Open, where he finished 8-under-par on Sunday to surge into a T10 finish.
Ranked 12th in total strokes gained, including 26th off-the-tee, 16th putting, 12th in scoring average, and seventh in birdie average, the 30-year-old American is worth a 0.25 unit investment in the outright market at 65-1. He’s strong with his driver and putter, although his play on approach and around the greens needs to be fine-tuned to contend.
Aaron Rai (+8000)
Aaron Rai is playing excellent golf but it has yet to translate into an outright win this season. In fact, Rai, who has multiple wins on the DP World Tour, has not recorded a victory on the PGA Tour since joining in 2022.
Recent finishes of T2, T7, and T4 are encouraging, especially since Rai is ranked fourth in total strokes gained, including seventh on approach, 34th off-the-tee, and first in driving accuracy rate. Rai finds 72.4 percent of greens in regulation and is 10th in scrambling. Putting is his biggest weakness, but at 80-1 odds, the Englishman could very well wind up in one of the final pairings on Sunday at Royal Troon.
One more 0.25 unit wager is sufficient to place on Rai this week.
Akshay Bhatia (+11000)
Akshay Bhatia has had time to stew on his three-put that cost him his second potential outright win this year. Bhatia is one of the Tour’s brightest ascending figures, talented off-the-tee, on approach, and with his putter. He’s solid at scrambling and is equipped with a powerful driver, but putting is generally where the 22-year-old can climb the leaderboard.
We didn’t see Bhatia compete at Renaissance Club last week, and it’s his debut at the British Open, but his game should translate well to links course golf. At 110-1 odds, a 0.10 unit investment returns over 10 units of profit, so don’t be afraid to sprinkle on Bhatia during his first event since blowing the lead at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
