2024 British Open Odds & Picks: Best Bets to Make/Miss Cut
The PGA Tour is headed to hallowed ground, as The Open Championship begins this week Thursday through Sunday at Royal Troon Golf Club in Ayrshire, Scotland for the fourth Major of the season.
The conditions will be downright raw for those used to baking in the heat of North America. Temperatures will not crack 70 degrees Fahrenheit at any point, with winds blowing steadily from 10-20 mph for most of the week. There are also showers in the forecast both Saturday and Sunday, although that’s to be expected.
We’ll focus on the best bets to make and/or miss the cut in this final Major on the 2024 PGA Tour schedule. We’ll look at recent production and key stats for success at Royal Troon GC, such as Driving Accuracy Percentage, Greens In Regulation Percentage, Strokes Gained: Around the Green, SG: Putting and SG: Tee-to-Green, among others.
Let’s review a few to make and/or miss the cut opportunities for the third Major of the season, the 2024 British Open.

To Make the Cut: Nine Golfer Parlay
OK, we’re going to eat a little bit of chalk in the “To Make the Cut” section. Hear me out, though. Let’s go big, or go home. Including a few of the “shoe-in” cut makers helps bump up the return. You certainly wouldn’t want to bet Scottie Scheffler (-1450) straight up, risking 14 1/2 times your potential return. That makes no sense betting such large favorites. However, tossing him into the mix to bump up your profit does make sense in a multi-leg parlay.
That being said, Scheffler, who ranks No. 1 in GIR, as well as SG: Tee-to-Green, needs to be part of your giant nine-leg parlay to make the cut at Royal Troon. It’s very hard to envision a scenario where Scheffler is headed home after Friday’s play.
In addition, Xander Schauffele (-850) is also a high-priced golfer you wouldn’t back straight up, but he inches up the profits slightly if included in a parlay. Schauffele checks off a ton of boxes for success, including a No. 2 ranking on the PGA Tour in SG: Total, while checking in No. 5 in SG: Approach the Green, No. 10 in SG: Putting, and No. 12 in SG: Off the Tee. He is so-so in Driving Accuracy Percentage at 61.68%, hitting 507 out of 822 fairways, and that’s the only area of slight concern.
The same holds true for Tommy Fleetwood and Tyrell Hatton, who are both listed at -600 to make the cut. You wouldn’t choose to play them straight up, as a $10 wager would return a profit of just $1.67. That makes no sense, but including both golfers is good for your profit, assuming each makes the cut. The Englishman Fleetwood ranks No. 5 in Driving Accuracy Percentage at 70.18%, hitting 560 out of a possibly 798 fairways. Meanwhile, the fellow Briton and LIV Golf combatant Hatton was T5 the last time The Open Championship stopped at Royal Troon, so he is an essential part of your parlay.
Aaron Rai (-360), Tony Finau (-320), and Sahith Theegala (-280) are also key parts of the parlay. I am not only expecting all three players to make it into the weekend but for the trio to challenge for the Claret Jug. Rai enters with five straight top-20 finishes, and three straight finishes of seventh or better, including a T4 at the Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club last weekend.
Meanwhile, Finau also has five straight top-20 runs and three consecutive top-10 showings, but he didn’t tune-up at the Scottish Open, as he last appeared at the Travelers Championship in late June. He was T3 at the U.S. Open, and T18 at the PGA Championship, so majors don’t faze him. Meanwhile, Theegala was T4 at the Scottish Open, and he is ready to go.
We’ll also toss in Jason Day (-192) and Shane Lowry (-240). Day is a tremendous putter, which will serve him well once he arrives on the dance floor at Royal Troon. The Irishman Shane Lowry has had a roller coaster ride this season, but he has made the cut in 13 straight events while posting a T9 at the Travelers last time out, his best finish since early a T6 at the PGA Championship. He had made the cut in all three majors this season, too. There is a little worry, as he missed the cut at Royal Troon in 2016. Hey, everything can’t be a slam dunk, right?
Use this nine-play wild parlay to nearly multiply up by seven times.
Bet: Nine-Player Parlay To Make The Cut - Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Tyrell Hatton, Tommy Fleetwood, Aaron Rai, Tony Finau, Sahith Theegala, Shane Lowry and Jason Day (+697)
To Miss the Cut: Brooks Koepka
The best value on the “Miss the Cut” board is Koepka. The LIV Golf defector just hasn’t been playing great golf, either in the majors of the PGA Tour or in LIV. He has been a very ordinary T26 or lower at all three majors this season, and each of his past four majors.
He won at LIV Golf Singapore at the Sentosa Golf Club back in early May, but it’s been all downhill since then. He just isn’t firing on all cylinders, and it wouldn’t be surprising if he goes home after just two rounds at Royal Troon.
Bet: To Miss the Cut - Brooks Koepka (+144)
