2024 U.S. Open Odds & Picks: Head-to-Head Matchups

The 2024 U.S. Open is the third major of the PGA Tour season and will be hosted at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina for the first time in a decade. It’s one of the most unique golf courses on the circuit, with wire grass, sand, and other native plants comprising the majority of the rough flanking the fairways.

Scottie Scheffler is an overwhelming favorite in the outright betting market coming off of his first win at The Memorial Tournament, which was also his first PGA Tour win in June. Scheffler now has five outright wins in 13 events this season and will look to make it six at Pinehurst this week, including a second major title following his win at Augusta National in April.

While Scheffler is +300 in the outright winner betting market, compared to +1100 or longer for every other golfer in the field, there are plenty of other betting markets to explore and wager ahead of the 2024 U.S. Open. In this article, we’ll analyze and recommend a couple of head-to-head matchups to target during the four rounds played at Pinehurst No. 2 this week.

Top in Region – Top Rest of World

The top in region betting market allows bettors to place wagers on golfers based on their heritage and which part of the world they are representing during the tournament. We’re going to the Top Rest of World group and targeting Cameron Smith. The Aussie joined LIV a couple of years ago and he remains one of the best putters in the world.

Smith has had his share of ups and downs at previous U.S. Open events but he did record a fourth-place finish during the 2023 U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club, winding up with a final scorecard of 6-under-par. He’ll need to ensure that his irons are in good order to contend in this group, alongside the likes of Hideki Matsuyama, Tom Kim, Min Woo Lee, Sungjae Im, and Corey Conners.

Smith does hold an advantage with his driver and putter over these five other golfers in the field. At +800 odds, we’re landing incredible value on Smith, sitting just behind Matsuyama, who is at +750 odds, so let’s stake a 0.25 unit wager to earn two units of profit with a strong finish from Smith at Pinehurst No. 2 this week.

Pick: Cameron Smith (+800)

Groups – Group A

FanDuel has a betting market for the U.S. Open called Groups, which takes five random golfers and assigns them value in their group. For this betting market, we’re diving into Group A and taking a golfer to outplay Scheffler, which is certainly a risk.

Bryson DeChambeau outplayed Scheffler at Valhalla during the PGA Championship, nearly forcing a playoff against Xander Schauffele, finishing his fourth round with a clutch birdie on the final hole. The LIV golfer has been excellent at majors in 2024, logging a T6 finish at The Masters and a solo runner-up finish at Valhalla.

DeChambeau is a force off-the-tee with his driver and his approach shots have been dialed in this year. The putting is where the inconsistencies begin to show up, but Pinehurst No. 2 is a lengthy track that demands power and accuracy with the driver and irons. Therefore, we’re investing in DeChambeau to beat a star-studded Group A that includes Scheffler (+110), Schauffele (+340), Rory McIlroy (+420), and Viktor Hovland (+700) this week.

Pick: Bryson DeChambeau (+650)
