2024 U.S. Open Odds & Picks: Patrick Cantlay
The U.S. Open is returning to Pinehurst No. 2 a classic Donald Ross design in the sandhills of North Carolina. Golf fans typically associate the U.S. Open with lightning-fast greens and thick, chewy rough that severely punishes errant shots. Pinehurst's greens will be slick, but instead of gnarly rough, sandy wastelands surround Pinehurst's fairways and greens, requiring players to be creative with recovery shots.
When the U.S. Open was last played at Pinehurst 10 years ago, Germany's Martin Kaymer crushed the field, finishing -9. Runners-up Rickie Fowler and Erik Compton finished -1. That only three players finished under par shows just how stern a test Pinehurst can be.
Will Scottie Scheffler build on a remarkable season by winning his second major of the year? Can Xander Schauffele win a second straight major after his victory at the PGA Championship a few weeks ago? Is the red-hot Rory McIlroy ready to win his first major in 10 years? Or will Pinehurst see a LIV Tour star such as Brooks Koepka or Bryson DeChambeau emerge triumphant?

Patrick Cantlay U.S. Open Course History
Patrick Cantlay didn't compete in the 2014 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2, so this will be the 32-year-old's first tourney at the North Carolina resort. The American has never shined at majors throughout his career, and he doesn't even have a top-10 finish in eight U.S. Open appearances. With that being said, Cantlay has bagged his best finishes in consecutive years, taking 14th in both 2022 and 2023.
Patrick Cantlay Recent Form
If we're being frank, this hasn't been the best campaign for Cantlay. He hasn't really threatened to win a tournament, as his best performance was a third-place outing at the RBC Heritage in April, where he still finished five strokes off the lead. This was one of two top-10 outings for the veteran golfer this season. He's just 77th on the PGA Tour in SG: Total (0.232 AVG), so the lack of success has translated to the stat sheet as well.
Patrick Cantlay 2024 U.S. Open Betting Outlook
The only market that interests me in regard to Cantlay is for him to finish inside the top 20, +165 at DraftKings). Cantlay is on a three year run of cashing this wager in the U.S. Open, and while he hasn't done anything magical this season, he's still a top-tier player. I'm taking a flier with this plus-money prop bet.
