2024 U.S. Open Odds & Picks: Rory McIlroy

The U.S. Open is returning to Pinehurst No. 2 a classic Donald Ross design in the sandhills of North Carolina. Golf fans typically associate the U.S. Open with lightning-fast greens and thick, chewy rough that severely punishes errant shots. Pinehurst's greens will be slick, but instead of gnarly rough, sandy wastelands surround Pinehurst's fairways and greens, requiring players to be creative with recovery shots.

When the U.S. Open was last played at Pinehurst 10 years ago, Germany's Martin Kaymer crushed the field, finishing -9. Runners-up Rickie Fowler and Erik Compton finished -1. That only three players finished under par shows just how stern a test Pinehurst can be.

Will Scottie Scheffler build on a remarkable season by winning his second major of the year? Can Xander Schauffele win a second straight major after his victory at the PGA Championship a few weeks ago? Is the red-hot Rory McIlroy ready to win his first major in 10 years? Or will Pinehurst see a LIV Tour star such as Brooks Koepka or Bryson DeChambeau emerge triumphant?

Rory McIlroy U.S. Open Course History

Being that Rory McIlroy is one of the veteran players on the Tour, this will be his second time competing at Pinehurst No. 2. The 35-year-old played the course 10 years ago at the 2014 U.S. Open, shooting +6 (71-68-74-73), good enough for 23rd on the leaderboard. Since then, McIlroy has been a mainstay in the top 10 at the U.S. Open, bagging five top-10 finishes. His only outright win came in 2011 at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland.

Rory McIlroy Recent Form

It has been another successful campaign for the Northern Irishman, whose highlight was a victory at the Wells Fargo Championship last month at Quail Hollow. Since that win in mid-May, McIlroy has rattled off three more top-20 finishes, including a fourth-place performance at the RBC Canadian Open two weeks ago. He's third on the PGA Tour in SG: Total (1.662 AVG).

Rory McIlroy 2024 U.S. Open Betting Outlook

McIlroy has four major championship victories to his name, but he hasn't won one since his dominant 2014 season. Simply for that reason, I'll be staying away from betting on him winning the tournament outright. However, the third-ranked player in the world can still be found at +110 to place inside the top 10 this weekend (DraftKings). McIlroy has finished eighth or better in seven of his last 10 majors.
