Despite big names like Cooper Flagg and Johni Broome headlining this year’s NCAA Tournament, I feel like Walter Clayton Jr. and the Florida Gators have become America's team.
While Clayton has become one of the most exciting players to watch this tournament, the Gators’ Final Four game against Auburn will be their toughest challenge yet.
After escaping with a win against Texas Tech, who ranked 39th in defense, they get an Auburn Tigers team ranked eighth in KenPom's adjusted defensive efficiency. They can’t afford to fall behind early again because the odds of them making a run on Auburn like they did against the Red Raiders are very slim.
Not only can Auburn play top-notch defense, but they can also score with the best of them and adapt to a faster style of play, in which we saw Texas Tech Struggle against Florida down the stretch.
If it were not for Cooper Flagg, Broom would be the unanimous player of the year. Despite battling through some injuries, Broom has eclipsed 20+ points in five of his last seven games.
I like Auburn to win this game outright, but we are taking some points just in case because we never know what could happen during March Madness.
As for the other game between Duke and Houston, I am trying not to overthink this one and take the better overall team.
This has been my favorite Kelvin Sampson team yet, but sometimes their offense gets a little stale at times, which has hurt them in years past. LJ Cryer has been on a different level this year, but they are about to face the best defensive team they have faced all year.
On the flip side, this will also be Duke's toughest challenge yet. They have yet to face a defense like the Houston Cougars, and it may take a while to adjust.
With both teams ranking near the bottom of the country in tempo, this game could move at a snail’s pace. But, ultimately, I think Flagg and the Blue Devils squeeze out a low-scoring win to advance to the National Championship game.
