Rory McIlroy's thrilling victory at The Masters last month set up some compelling storylines for the second major of the season, the 2025 PGA Championship, which will be played this week at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina.

McIlroy completed the career grand slam with his win at Augusta. If he wins again this week, he'll be halfway to a true grand slam. McIlroy has fared well at Quail Hollow throughout his career, having won four tournaments there. It's a course that favors big hitters — right up McIlroy's alley.

But McIlroy isn't even the favorite this week. That would be Scottie Scheffler, the No. 1 player in the world. Scheffler cruised to an eight-shot victory at his most recent event, the CJ Cup Byron Nelson.

Cameron Smith played at Quail Hollow in the 2017 PGA Championship, and it did not go well. He shot a +15 in the first two days and missed the cut. Overall, his PGA Championship history has not been positive. While he has finished inside the top 10, he has had several recent finishes outside of the top 50.

Recent Form

2025 featured a rough start for Smith as his best finish was T-19 in his first four tournaments. He's been far better in recent tournaments with three straight top-10 finishes on the LIV Tour. His trip to the Masters was a disaster as he had an awful Day 2, where he bogeyed the sixth hole and missed the cut.
