The loss of Li Yueru pushed the point spread to over 30. As much confidence as we have in Team USA, that's a heavy lead to cover, considering this will be the team’s first game and the rotations haven't been worked out yet.
Taking Team USA at halftime to have a lead of 16 points or more is the safer approach. China is in a bad spot with regard to pace and volume of possessions. Team USA will relentlessly attack their opponents, and China may not be able to keep up with the barrages of scoring.
China will have to slow the game to a half-court battle and try to grind Team USA down on offense. The only way to limit the Americans from scoring is to limit their possessions. China doesn't have the high-scoring prowess that Team USA is going to look to unload on the competition. If Team USA’s second unit is made up of younger talent, they could be up by 20+ points going into the half.

While we are fully on board with Team USA having a comfortable lead going into halftime, the first quarter may be a completely different story.
Team USA will be running out a starting five that has no history together, while China will more than likely focus on playing at a slower pace and limiting possessions for their opponent. It wouldn't be surprising to see Team USA struggle through the first quarter and find their footing as the game goes on.
This is also a different game than Team USA is used to. While the WNBA is highly physical, international play relies more on finesse and chemistry. That may take at least a quarter to get used to.
We expect a significant number of missed attempts in the first quarter. Considering China will look to grind out possessions and work the clock, the 40-point threshold seems ambitious.
