Norway (+300) vs. England (-115) | Draw (+270) | O/U 2.5 (-142/+116)
In South Florida, Norway looks to row its way to the semifinals against England, a nation that won its only World Cup in 1966 as hosts. Both have been outstanding in this tournament, and each side features a superstar.
Norway’s Erling Haaland has won over fans across North America with his infectious personality and outstanding play. The 25-year-old, who turns 26 on July 21st, has netted a goal in all four matches at this World Cup. He was one of 10 regular starters who sat out the 4-1 group stage finale loss to France, as Norway could not improve or worsen its standing.
Haaland has scored seven goals. He has taken 18 shots, including 12 shots on goal. He scored a pair of goals in their 2-1 Round of 16 victory over Brazil.
Norway had never made it past the Round of 16 until this World Cup. Its previous best finish was 12th in 1938, the country’s debut. It is back in the World Cup for the first time since 1998, when it went to the Round of 16, finishing 15th in France.
England’s Harry Kane has six goals, one assist, 19 shots and 10 shots on goal in this World Cup. He had a goal and an assist in England’s Round of 16 win against Mexico. He also saved England from a shocking result in the Round of 32, as Congo DR took a late 1-0 lead before Kane struck twice in the final minutes.
There is a lot more than just Haaland and Kane in this one. Norway has five different scorers, although Haaland has accounted for seven of the team’s 11 goals in the World Cup. Jude Bellingham and Kane give England a dynamic one-two punch. Bellingham has four goals in this World Cup, while Marcus Rashford has the team’s other goal.
Let’s go with a draw in regular time, and expect this one to be decided on penalties. The run isn’t over for Norway, either, as I expect them to advance. Taking Norway to advance on penalties offers a 10X payout.
Norway vs. England Picks
- Method of Victory: Norway in Penalty Shootout (+1000)
- Norway to Qualify for the Next Round (+172)
- Jude Bellingham Anytime Goal Scorer (+250)
- Correct Score: 1-1 Draw (after regulation) (+600)
- Under 2.5 Goals (+116)
Argentina (-145) vs. Switzerland (+490) | Draw (+250) | O/U 2.5 (+128/-158)
Defending World Cup champion Argentina will meet Switzerland at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, on Saturday night, as Lionel Messi and La Albiceleste look to continue their quest to repeat.
We haven’t had a repeat World Cup winner since Brazil won the 1958 World Cup in Sweden and the 1962 World Cup in Chile, thanks to the legendary Pelé. The back-to-back club is exclusive, too, as only Brazil and Italy (1934, 1938) have accomplished the feat.
Switzerland stands in the way of history. It isn’t a squad with a standout or superstar player, but this is a very deep and balanced side. Johan Manzambi leads the Swiss with three goals and five points, while Breel Embolo is on his heels with two goals and four points. Rubén Vargas has found the back of the net twice, too, totaling three points. Granit Xhaka and Dan Ndoye also have goals at this World Cup.
The Swiss have a pretty prestigious World Cup history, especially for a nation of its size. It has qualified for the World Cup 13 times. In its previous 12 appearances, it has reached the quarterfinals three times. Switzerland’s best-ever finish was seventh at both the 1934 and 1938 World Cups, so it’s been a while since it reached these depths in the tournament.
Switzerland reached the Round of 16 in Qatar, the furthest they’ve advanced in the three previous World Cups, after bowing out in the group stage in South Africa in 2010.
For Argentina, there is Lionel Messi. You’ve probably heard of him. He has eight goals at the World Cup this year and 21 career World Cup goals - the most of any player. The 39-year-old also has an assist, giving him nine points in four starts at this tournament.
While Argentina has five different scorers - Lautaro Martínez, Enzo Fernández, Lisandro Fernández, Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso - those players have just one goal apiece. This is the Lionel Messi show. That’s good and bad.
Argentina was almost stunned by Cape Verde in the Round of 32, barely escaping with a 3-2 win. It nearly fell to Egypt, too, as the Pharaohs led 2-0 late. A controversial video assistant referee (VAR) decision wiped out a goal for Egypt at the 58-minute mark, proving costly. Argentina erupted with three late goals to complete Egypt’s collapse.
It’s concerning that Argentina needed heroics to beat Cape Verde and Egypt, though, and one can argue the Swiss are better, deeper and more disciplined. While this is uncharted territory for Switzerland, look for the monumental upset, with the Swiss advancing.
