An Early Look at Super Bowl 54 Futures (NFL)

With the NFL regular season quickly approaching, everyone’s wondering who will win Super Bowl 54 down in Miami. No, Dolphins’ fans, you won’t be seeing a home field Super Bowl win this year. In fact, the Dolphins opened with the worst odds to win the Super Bowl at a whopping 500-1, which has since dropped to 150-1. The Cardinals were second-worst at 300-1, and the next worst opening odds saw a plethora of teams at 100-1. That’s how bad the Dolphins are expected to be.

But this isn’t about the bad teams, this is about the best bets to win Super Bowl 54. So without further ado, let’s take a look at the favorites, some longshots, and even one team whose opening 100-1 odds may not be all that ridiculous.

Favorites:

New England Patriots (+700)
Boring. I know. It’s Tom Brady; it’s Bill Belichick. What more needs to be said? Every year might be Brady’s last season, and that means every year there’s a good chance that Brady rides off into the sunset just like Peyton Manning did in 2016. Until Tom Terrific is good and retired, the Patriots will be the favorites or co-favorites to take home the title, and rightfully so. Odds of +700 for a dynasty that still has something left in the tank? I’ll take that.

Los Angeles Chargers (+1600)
I’ve been very vocal that the Chargers are my pick to hoist the Lombardi Trophy this year. Last season, they tied the Chiefs for the best record in the AFC, but they had to settle for the fifth seed because they lost out on the AFC West to Patrick Mahomes and company. This season their schedule is much easier than last year, and their roster will have some playoff experience. You’re not going to get better odds for this team, a talented bunch led by a quarterback in Philip Rivers who knows exactly what is missing from his resume: That elusive Super Bowl ring.

Philadelphia Eagles (+1200)
I’m shocked the Eagles’ odds are so high right now. They seem to be a favorite on most boards, and yet Vegas has them pretty far down the list. Maybe this has to do with Carson Wentz’s unknown health, and the fact that the Eagles don’t have Nick Foles to come in and play hero should Wentz miss time. But even after a disappointing regular season last year, the Eagles were one Alshon Jeffrey drop away from possibly upsetting the Saints. They’re better this year and their division is worse. We’ll be seeing them in January, and as we have seen of late, the Eagles can work some magic once the new year begins.

Kansas City Chiefs (+800)
A lot of people think the Patriots and the Chiefs are on a collision course to rematch in the AFC Championship. I’m not one of those people, but it’s hard to discount Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes, especially after it was announced that Tyreek Hill wouldn’t be suspended by the league. That means the Chiefs’ offense will be putting on shows week after week just like last year’s record-setting season. If the defense shows up, this team is going to be nearly impossible to beat. But that is a huge if, one that could be enough to prevent them from hoisting the trophy.

Long Shots:

Minnesota Vikings (+2600)
The Vikings come into this season after one of their most disappointing performances in recent memory, and their odds are definitely worth taking a look at for any bettor who wants to throw some money on a long shot with a legitimate chance to win. Their schedule isn’t favorable, but they play in a wide-open division. With a better offensive line — it certainly can’t get worse — protecting Kirk Cousins, I expect Minnesota to again be in the playoff hunt. Hopefully, this year they don’t blow it in Week 17.

Jacksonville Jaguars (+4000)
The AFC South is wide-open yet again. Yes, the Colts are heavily favored this year, and with good reason. Did you see how Andrew Luck played last season? Fortunately for the Jags, they have the best defense in the division. They may have given up last season, but before then it always felt like they were a quarterback away from being true contenders. Now they have their guy in Nick Foles. Not only should the Jags compete for the division, but there is no reason why they can’t return to their form from a couple of seasons ago, where they very nearly found their way into the Super Bowl.

The 100-1

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+8000)
The odds dropped to 80-1, but I’m still calling them the 100-1 since that’s how they started. I’m not as high on the Bucs as some other people are, but with Bruce Arians taking over and an insane amount of talent on offense, it’s not all that ridiculous to think that Tampa can get into the playoffs. Yes, they play in a very tough division, but who knows what’s going to happen with the Panthers this year, and neither the Falcons nor the Saints are unbeatable. It’s not likely, but if you’re looking for one of the teams that opened with 100-1 odds to win the Super Bowl, this is your bunch.
