Arizona Cardinals at San Francisco 49ers Odds & Game Pick

The San Francisco 49ers’ undefeated season came to an end in a 27-24 overtime loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football. Now, after a very physical, draining contest, they’ll have to go up against an Arizona team that was a thorn in their side just a few weeks ago in a 28-25 win.

The point spread for this matchup has shifted from 49ers -14 to San Francisco -11 since it opened. That might be because of a mounting list of injuries for the 49ers. Can they take care of business here and cover a big number?

Overview

Arizona has won eight of the last nine meetings between these teams outright. However, both of these teams look much different now than they have in recent years. The Cardinals are a team in transition with a rookie quarterback and a first-year head coach. Arizona has won a lot of the games that it has been expected to win but also lost the games it’s been expected to lose. Now the Cardinals head to California for their second straight road game after losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 30-27 last week. Kyler Murray threw for 324 yards and three touchdowns but had a critical interception late in the game. Murray and this Arizona offense will have a much more difficult time this week against the toughest defense they have faced so far this season in the 49ers.

Meanwhile, San Francisco might have suffered its first loss of the season last week, but it’s important to provide some perspective for that defeat. The 49ers were without their top two offensive weapons in tight end George Kittle and wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders. Despite losing both of those players to injury and committing three turnovers that led to touchdowns, San Francisco could have still beat the Seattle Seahawks in overtime if their rookie substitute kicker had made a potential game-winning field goal in overtime. Instead, Chase McLaughlin missed, and the Seahawks went the other way to finish off a wild Monday Night Football matchup with a game-winning field goal of their own.

The biggest question mark heading into this week is how Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers’ offense will rebound without a number of key offensive weapons. It looks like Kittle and Sanders are game-time decisions at-best while running back Matt Breida and left tackle Joe Staley are out. The 49ers have enough depth to get by, though, and if they can pound the Cardinals on the ground, they should get the win. Arizona allows 130.4 rushing yards per game on the road, which ranks 24th in the NFL.

Trends

  • Cardinals have won 8 of last 9 meetings straight up
  • Arizona is 5-1 ATS in its last 6 games
  • 49ers are 0-4 ATS in last 4 head-to-head meetings vs. Cardinals
  • San Francisco is 5-2 SU in its last 7 home games

Bottom Line

The Cardinals covered as a 10.5-point underdog when these teams met in Arizona on Thursday Night Football back in Week 9. Despite losing three in a row, the Cardinals have been a competitive team that seems to find a way to hang around at the very least in most games. While the 49ers are clearly the superior team, they are dealing with some key injuries and are playing on a short week coming off an emotional loss. San Francisco will win this game, but it will be a lot closer than most people expect.

Prediction: 49ers 28, Cardinals 20
