Arizona Cardinals at Seattle Seahawks Odds and Game Pick (2020)

Two divisional rivals trending in opposite directions will take center stage on Thursday Night Football this week when the Seattle Seahawks host the Arizona Cardinals. Despite the absence of the “12th Man” at CenturyLink Field, there will be plenty of noise surrounding this game with both 6-3 teams involved in a nip-and-tuck race for the NFC West division crown. The betting odds offer a slight edge to the home team.

Overview

The Cardinals have been the toast of the league this week. On what very well could be the play of the year, DeAndre Hopkins caught MVP candidate Kyler Murray’s Hail Mary heave in the end zone, resulting in a miracle win over the Buffalo Bills.

The whirlwind continues for Kliff Kingsbury’s squad with a quick turnaround to play Thursday night. Of course, it was the Cardinals who put an end to the Seahawks’ undefeated start with their comeback overtime win just four weeks ago. Murray, Hopkins, Christian Kirk, and their bevy of offensive weapons will look to run roughshod over the porous Seattle defense once again in Week 11.

From 5-0 to 6-3, there is suddenly cause for concern in the Pacific Northwest. Russell Wilson’s MVP case is drying up quickly after throwing seven interceptions in the Seahawks’ last four games, including three against the Cardinals in Week 7. Seattle figures to have reinforcements returning to the backfield Thursday in the form of Chris Carson and Carlos Hyde. With that said, wideout Tyler Lockett missed practice on Monday and Tuesday with a knee injury. This is particularly concerning given the phenomenal job Patrick Peterson did in blanketing D.K. Metcalf the first time these teams met.

Trends

  1. Cardinals 2020 Betting Trends: 5-4 ATS; 3-6 to the Over
  2. Seahawks 2020 Betting Trends: 5-4 ATS; 6-3 to the Over
  3. The Cardinals are 5-1 ATS in their last six head-to-head meetings against the Seahawks.
  4. Road teams are 11-3-1 straight up in the last 15 head-to-head meetings between the Cardinals and Seahawks.
  5. Six of the last nine head-to-head meetings between the Cardinals and Seahawks have been decided by three points or fewer.

Prop Bet

Anytime Touchdown Scorer: Carlos Hyde (+165 at DraftKings Sportsbook)
Seahawks running backs have had a nose for finding the end zone this season despite rushing touchdowns only accounting for 24.3% of their trips to the end zone. As fantasy managers know all too well, Seattle’s backfield has been in turmoil since the last meeting between these teams, as both Carson and Hyde have been sidelined with injuries. Carson left the Sunday night game against Arizona early, opening the door for Hyde to step in and post a fine stat line.

Reports seem to indicate that both backs could return Thursday night, but it’s worth noting that Carson remains limited in terms of practice reps and work. Hyde, meanwhile, is a full-go. If Carson is out, I really like +165 for Hyde to reach pay dirt. Even if Carson does suit up, we could be looking at a more even split between the two than was typical earlier in the season.

Bottom Line

The betting lines are projecting another shootout between these offense-first teams, and rightfully so. The market has moved up a full point from the opening total of 56.5, while the Cardinals have seen some sharp money in their favor on the spread. It’s worth noting that the line was originally Seahawks -5.5 on the lookahead and reopened at -3.5 after Sunday’s games.

While I tend to lean toward Seattle successfully avenging its loss in Arizona from four weeks ago, the status of Lockett cannot be understated. He was crucial to the Seahawks’ offensive attack in that win, tallying 15 catches on 20 targets for 200 yards and three scores. If he is out, Wilson will immediately be up against it as he looks to get back on track.

With that said, I lean toward the simple contrarian play of betting the total under. Seattle showed marked improvement defensively against the Rams last week, and I expect the unit to again step up in what could almost be considered a must-win at home in terms of the tight division race. Add in a potential hangover effect for the Cardinals’ offense after last week’s heroics, and there are multiple angles pointing toward fewer points in this game than the public might perceive.

Pick: Under 57.5 Total Points (-110 at DraftKings Sportsbook)
