As some of Asia begins the next phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, some soccer and basketball leagues have begun to restart slowly, albeit with limited or no fans. Thus far, the biggest league to start their season on time mid-outbreak is in Belarus. The Vysshaya Liga will enter week four of their season as if nothing is going on around them.

Fans are sparse, but not due to restrictions, as the Belarusian league (via the government), has insisted on keeping things largely the same. After reading that would likely be the case from the start, I’ve followed the league for betting purposes, and I’m starting to see some patterns emerge.

Let’s look at one game Saturday morning I have my eye on.

Torpedo Zhodino (+104) vs. Energetik-BGU (+220), 9:00 AM EST (via DraftKings Sportsbook)

Historically a very middle of the road franchise, Torpedo finds themselves mid-pack again in 2020. After winning their first two contests, both 1-0, they fell flat last weekend against then-winless Dinamo Minsk, losing 0-2 on the road.

A look back at last week also reveals just two shots on target in the entire game — and a corner differential of 4-11 with a severe lack of quality chances. Despite their winning record, Torpedo’s zero goal differential is cause for concern for a team that has failed to find a good rhythm thus far in 2020.

One of the most fun teams to watch in the Belarusian Premier League this year is also one of the youngest in professional soccer: Energetik-BGU. Through three games, Energetik (which translates to “students”), boasts a +5 (6-1) goal differential, and they find themselves at the top of the table.

In their first season back at the top level since getting relegated in the early 2000s, this team has been the most impressive thus far, and they will look to keep pace as their competition gets its legs in the coming weeks.

While I certainly don’t want to jump to any conclusions in this relatively young (and obscure) season, I’ll continue to ride the hot hand for as long as they continue to play at a high level.

Following the trend we’ve been riding all season, anytime there’s an under 2.5 at near even money, I’m playing that as well. Through three weeks of play, the final score in this league has now landed at a total of two or under in 66.7% of matches.

Pick: Energetik-BGU +220 & UNDER 2.5
