Bermuda Championship Betting Guide (PGA)

Anticipation for the Masters continues to heat up as the golf world is one week closer to the next Major tournament of the season. We got a good glimpse of the caliber of competition expected last week at the Zozo Championship. Patrick Cantlay took home his third career PGA title after edging out the world’s number two and three ranked golfers, Justin Thomas and Justin Rahm. Cantlay was brilliant on his final day, making nine birdies en route to his one-stroke victory.

The PGA Tour will head to Port Royal Golf Golf Course for the Bermuda Championship. After a couple of loaded fields and the Masters upcoming next week, the quality of competition takes a big step back. The majority of the world’s best will use this week to prepare for Augusta. A 132-man field will tee it up for the second annual Bermuda Championship for some island golf.

Defending champion Brandon Todd will return to defend his title after shooting 24-under last year. Korn Ferry Tour money leader of 2019/20, Will Zalatoris will be a name to watch after three top-10 finishes in his last four events. Harold Varner III, Doc Redman, and Emiliano Grillo round out the top-five highest priced golfers on DraftKings.

Course Preview

Located on the lovely island of Bermuda, Port Royal Golf Course is one of the shorter courses on the PGA circuit, measuring at just 6,828 yards. The Par 71 golf course has played host to the PGA Grand Slam of Golf from 2009-2014 and the inaugural Bermuda Championship of 2019. The wind is the natural defense on this track, with scoring conditions bound to get difficult with that coastal breezes.

Golfers will have to adapt to the many different undulations across the course. There are tremendous elevation changes spread out throughout the course and several isolated tee boxes. Accuracy off the tee will be important with penal rough. The greens feature Bermuda grass with a mix of TifEagle Bermudagrass. Wedge play will be important with several scorable, short par 4s on the scorecard.

Best Bets to Win

Harold Varner III (+2300)
Elite ball-striking and a solid approach play should be the recipe for success this week. Varner III checks both these boxes. Over the past 36 rounds, Varner III ranks first in strokes gained: tee-to-green, ninth in strokes gained: off-the-tee, and fourth in strokes gained: approach. He is fifth in opportunities gained over this time period and is very sharp with his wedge play.

Doc Redman (+2900)
A tremendous ball-striker who has two third-place finishes in his last five events is plenty worthy of backing at this number. Over the past 36 rounds, Redman ranks fourth in the field in opportunities gained, second in strokes gained: approach and third in strokes gained: tee-to-green. He finished 2019/20 ranked 13th in driving accuracy, so he should be able to hit plenty of fairways and give himself favorable approach shots all week.

Best Top-10 Bets

Justin Suh (+450)
The young 23-year-old is playing some excellent golf since joining the Tour. Eighth at the Shriners, 14th at the Corales, and 21st at the Barracuda, Suh is piling up the birdies. In my rolling stats model, Suh ranks fourth in the field in GIR, 13th in putting average, fifth in approach, and fourth in tee-to-green.

Will Gordon (+1100)
Gordon shows a major value when sorting the field by performance on shorter courses. He ranks 10th in strokes gained: tee-to-green, 19th in strokes gained: approach and 12th in ball-striking in the last 24 rounds on courses less than 7,200 yards. The long-hitting youngster can pile up the birdies and had a third-place finish at the Travelers in June.
