Best Bets for the RSM Classic (PGA Betting)

Last week, we saw Brendon Todd go back-to-back with his win at the Mayakoba Classic. Todd was coming off a win at the Bermuda Championship, and to win a second time in as many starts is truly remarkable. Just over a year ago, Todd was close to quitting. He was outside the top 2,000 in the world and missed 37 of 40 cuts at one point. This is a miraculous story, and he can join some very elite company if he makes it three-straight wins this upcoming week.

Another good story from last week was two Mexican natives finishing in the top-10 in their home country. Abraham Ancer (featured in last weeks’ article) and Carlos Ortiz gave their family and friends plenty to cheer about with impressive performances. My value play of the week, Harris English, came close to winning at 60/1 with a fifth-place finish.

The PGA Tour finally returns to American soil for the RSM Classic. This event is played annually in Sea Island, Georgia. Last year’s winner, Charles Howell III, will attempt to defend his title. Atop the betting board this week is Webb Simpson at +700. Behind Simpson are Billy Horschel and Matt Kuchar at +1600, and Howell III at +2500. It is not an overly strong field, so just like last week, we will attempt to find some value down the betting board.

Course Preview

The RSM Classic is played at two different golf courses. The Seaside Course measures just over 7,000 yards and plays as a par 70. It plays slightly more difficult than the Plantation course because it is on the coast and is subject to more wind. The Plantation course plays as a par 72, but it is very similar in length. After Friday’s cut, the rest of the tournament will be played on the Seaside Course, so we will focus on key features of this particular track. There are eight par 4s that measure between 400-450 yards on Seaside. Approach shots from 100-150 will be crucial this week.

Key Stats

  • Par 4 scoring: 400-450 yards
  • Birdie-or-better
  • Course history
  • Strokes gained: approach

Best Bets to Win

Scottie Scheffler (+3300 on DraftKings Sportsbook)
Scheffler is an incredible young talent who seems poised for his first PGA Tour victory. He is coming off of a nice week in Mexico, where he finished T18 with an 11-under showing. Ranking second in Par 4 efficiency from 400-450 yards, this course should suit his golf-game nicely. He is also fourth in the field in strokes gained: approach, and first in strokes gained: tee-to-green.

With six-of-six cuts made to start of his first-ever PGA season, Scheffler is in fine form. He has four top-20 finishes in the six events he has participated in. Third at the Bermuda Championship and seventh at the Greenbrier, Scheffler has come close to breaking through. It will only take one hot week with the putter for Scheffler to win, as the rest of his golf-game is rock solid.

Brian Gay (+5000 on DraftKings Sportsbook)
My value bet of the week is Brian Gay at 50/1. Gay has three top-15 finishes in his last four events and has solid course history here. Coming off a 14th place finish last week, including a six-under 65 on Sunday, Gay is in excellent form. He placed third at the Bermuda Championship two weeks ago and seventh at the Shriners Championship last month. Yet to miss a cut this season, Gay is rolling.

In his last two events at the RSM Classic, Gay has two top-25 finishes. He finished third here in 2018, so he has come close to winning it before. Consistently one of the best putters in the game, all he will have to do is consistently hit greens to give himself a chance. This is great value for an in-form golfer who has succeeded in this event before.
