Best Bets for the Sanderson Farms Championship (PGA)

Things got intense on the final hole of the Puntacana Resort & Club Championship, as Hudson Swafford sunk an eight-foot par putt to return to the winner’s circle. Swafford amazingly did not three-putt once the entire week, and this marks his first victory since the CareerBuilder Challenge in 2017. He will take home with him 500 crucial FedEx Cup points as he attempts to make East Lake for the first time.

The PGA Tour now heads to Jackson, Mississippi for the Sanderson Farms Championship. This event has been a regular stop on Tour since 2014, and the winner will once again be awarded 500 FedEx Cup points. A field of 144 golfers is set to tee it up at the Country Club of Jackson. Once again, we will not see a very strong field with only one top-50 golfer making an appearance.

Scottie Scheffler, Sunjae Im, and Will Zalatoris headline the field in Mississippi. Scheffler will be making his first start back since testing positive for COVID-19. Zalatoris will be looking for his third consecutive top-10 after a T8 showing at the Corales Championship. South African Louis Oosthuizen announced his withdrawal on Monday due to unknown reasons. Adam Long will look to rebound after squandering a 54-hole lead in Punta Cana.

Here are the past five winners of the event:

  • 2019 Sebastian Munoz (-18)
  • 2018 Cameron Champ (-21)
  • 2017 Ryan Armour (-19)
  • 2016 Cody Gribble (-20)
  • 2015 Peter Malnati (-18)

Course Preview

The Country Club of Jackson, Mississippi measures slightly longer than the Tour average, playing as a par 72, 7,461 yard-long track. Generous off the tee, the course features wide and flat fairways. It is a pretty straightforward test of golf with few water hazards and trees in play. Similar to last week, we should see a score in the high teens, low twenties. Golfers will need to score well on the four par 5s and roll it well on these Champion Bermudagrass greens.

Scottie Scheffler (+1000)
The betting outright for good reason, Scheffler was playing some tremendous golf prior to testing positive for COVID-19. In his last six events to finish the 2019/20 season, Sheffler recorded six top-25 finishes. Even more impressive, he placed fourth at the PGA Championship, and fifth at the Tour Championship. Over the last 24 rounds, he ranks second in birdies gained, 8th in Par 5 scoring, and first in strokes gained: tee-to-green.

Doc Redman  (+3400)
A supreme ball-striker who has two 3rd place finishes in his last three starts, Redman seems close to a win. Over the last 24 rounds, Redman ranks third in strokes gained: ball-striking, ninth in strokes gained: approach, and 12th in strokes gained: tee-to-green. He has the second most opportunities gained in the field during this time and I expect plenty of birdie chances once again this week.

Best Top-10 Bets

Carlos Ortiz (+600)
Ortiz has the most strokes gained over the last five years at this course (22.33). Consecutive finishes of T4 and T3 here in his last two times out make him a strong bet at this number. To go along with the course history, his recent form has been quite nice. He had a T25 in an extremely stacked field at the BMW Championship and a T46 at the Safeway Open to begin this season.

Cameron Percy (+900)
The Aussie has the third most strokes gained at the Sanderson Farm over the last five years (18.88). Percy has finishes of T11, T15, T34 and T42 to his name since 2016. He is playing some of the best golf of his career and now goes to another likely birdie fest. Percy is coming off a T8 at the Corales Championship and will hope to carry the strong momentum with him to Mississippi.
