The fourth and final major tournament of the PGA season will take place at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland this week. It is the first time Royal Portrush golf course will play host to the event since 1951. As is the case with all majors in golf, expect a world-class field this week with numerous top-50 players participating. This links-style course will challenge golfers’ overall games and expect to see the cream of the crop rise to the top.

Course Preview

Royal Portrush golf course is a par 71, 7,337 yard-long links course. Like a normal links-style course, the track will play pretty wide-open with wind becoming a huge factor. There are fewer blink shots and the course has the least amount of bunkers in play out of any links course on Tour. Golfers will have to plot their way around the course to give themselves good angles into difficult greens. Doglegs are all over the course, and players will have to be on point with their ball striking to score well this week.

Best Bets

Rory Mcllroy (9/1 on William Hill sportsbook)
A native to Ireland, Mcllroy has the home-course advantage and currently has the course record at Royal Portrush. He shot a 61 at the course as a 16-year-old, and his course knowledge and experience will be key this week. Rory has played some of best golf of his career recently, and his win at the Canadian Open June was evident of that. One of the longest players on Tour, look for Rory to gain an advantage off the tee and find himself with plenty of birdie opportunities.

Henrik Stenson (29/1 on William Hill sportsbook)
A links course specialists, Stenson is the prototypical golfer to target on a course like Royal Portrush. He is the second-best performer on links-style golf courses per futureoffantasy.com. Stenson gains an average of 3.204 strokes on the field on links-style courses. A pure ball-striker, Stenson is accurate off the tee and should be able to plot his way around the course. His approach game is the best in the PGA and is coming off a top-5 performance at the Scottish Open this past week.

Matt Kuchar (34/1 on William Hill sportsbook)
Another golfer who has their all-round golf game working right now is Matt Kuchar. “Kuch” is leading the entire PGA in FedEx cup points this year, and is top-20 in several key statistical categories. He is fifth in scoring average, third in greens-in-regulation, tenth in driving accuracy, and 17th in birdie average. Kuchar just finished top-20 in the Scottish Open this past week and will be well acclimated to the conditions coming in Ireland.

Long-Shots to consider

Patrick Reed (81/1 on William Hill sportsbook)
The former Masters champion Patrick Reed appears to be rounding into excellent form ahead of this season’s last major of the year. Reed is three straight top-30 outings, headlined by a fifth-place finish at the Rocket Mortgage Classic a few weeks ago. A links-course specialist, Reed is the 12th best on Tour, gaining 2.466 strokes on the field. A magician around the green (10th in strokes gained around the green) Reed will be able to navigate his up and downs and save par more often than not.

Kevin Streelman (200/1 ( with top 5 each/way) on William Hill sportsbook)
A late addition to the field, Streelman seems primed to score well at Royal Portrush. He is the type of golfer that can use his elite ball-striking skills to strategically plan himself around the golf course and attack pins. With two top-15 showings in his last four outings, the form is also there. Streelman is 21st in strokes gained tee-to-green, 26th in strokes gained: approach and 34th in total birdies.
