Best Bets to Win the Rocket Mortgage Classic (PGA Betting)

It was great to see Chez Reavie win the Travelers Championship this past week, as he claimed his first PGA Tour victory since 2008. It was a close one last week as four of the five betting picks I provided for the Travelers Championship ended up finishing T-15 or better. While we didn’t win any outright bet, it is important to take the each-way bet. Sportsbooks such as William Hill will give you the option to take the each-way on a specific golfer. The most straightforward way to answer the question of what is an each-way bet is to basically think of it as two bets – one bet is to win and the other is to place. As an each-way bet is two separate bets, you have to double your stake. You will receive a return on your bet if your selection wins but also if it places.

Course Preview: Detroit Golf Club

The Rocket Mortgage Classic is a new event on Tour this year and will take place at the Detroit Golf Club. The course has been extended to match PGA length standards and thus will play as a par 72, and 7,340 yards long. While we have no course history to lean on there are some  features of the layout to key into. There are four Par 5s and the word is there should be plenty of birdie and eagle opportunities on each. A few of the par 4s are extremely short as well, as four of them measure between 350-400 yards. The course is a Donald Ross design, so we will focus on several players and their past performances on these style of tracks.

Outright Bets

Dustin Johnson (11/2 on William Hill Sportsbook)
DJ is the class of the field this week and should be well rested after taking the Travelers Championship off. Dustin Johnson has two runner-up finishes this year at the Masters and PGA Championship and seems due to win his next event. The Rocket Mortgage Classic will be a birdie fest and DJ should have no problem going low here. He is sixth on Tour in strokes gained at Donald Ross Courses, gaining 2.947 strokes on the field. Currently third in scoring average this year and second in strokes total, look for DJ to make a run on Sunday.

Ryan Moore (30/1 on William Hill Sportsbook)
Moore is coming off a T-15 performance at the Travelers and this track should suit him well. He is currently third on tour in driving accuracy and has an extremely sharp approach game (23rd on Tour in SG: Approach). Donald Ross designed courses have been kind to him in the past, as he ranks 19th on Tour in strokes gained at these courses. I like Moore to carry his good form into this event and score well.

Aaron Wise (40/1 on William Hill Sportsbook)
Wise is well rested and coming off a solid T-35 showing at the US Open. A supreme birdie maker, Wise ranks seventh on tour in that category. His length off the tee should be an advantage for him on some of the long par 5s. Wise is second on tour in par 4 scoring on holes over 450 yards and the course has three of these. If he can find some consistency this week, look for Wise to go low.
