Best Super Bowl LVI Novelty Prop Bets (2022)

The Super Bowl is arguably the grandest sports betting day of the year. From the opening coin toss to the Gatorade color dumped on the winning coach, you can bet on just about anything in the Super Bowl.

And while I’ve got plenty of plays on the game itself, I always love to throw a few bucks on things like the national anthem and the halftime show. It makes the Super Bowl that much more fun.

Here are some breakdowns and bets on some of the most popular Super Bowl novelty props.

Does the national anthem go over?

Many sportsbooks listed the national anthem odds between 95 and 99 seconds, which is just a bit longer than one minute and 30 seconds. This is actually a relatively low number compared to years past. The anthem odds haven’t been this low since 2012, when Kelly Clarkson actually pushed and sang the song in exactly one minute and 34 seconds.

This year’s singer is Mickey Guyton, a country artist who I fully admit I’ve never heard of. Sorry to Mickey and her family. But that didn’t stop me from doing my research.

Guyton has sung the anthem before, and in this example she steamrolled through it in about 85 seconds. If we’re using past precedent, then an under might be the play. Of course, this is the Super Bowl, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see Guyton sing it differently this time around.

Another thing to consider is that Guyton is aware that money will be wagered on her performance. Check out this quote she told ET Online:

“I don’t want to give up the color because there’s bets going on about the color I will wear and how long I’m going to sing the national anthem,” Guyton said. “I guess they call me Quicky Mickey because I do sing the national anthem fast.”

Could this be posturing? Could Quicky Mickey be speaking the truth? It’s hard to say. But 99.5 seconds is too low.

The pick: Over 99.5 seconds

Coin toss: Does tails really never fail?

From a value perspective, betting on the coin toss is actually a bad bet. That’s because most sportsbooks list both heads and tails at a juiced -105, which actually implies a 51.2% probability. However, we all know the coin toss is truly a 50-50 proposition.

However, I know how many of you can’t help but bet on the coin toss. And since there’s really no way to handicap the toss, I took a look at past results to determine which side of the coin might be “due.”

Believe it or not, heads has actually won three of the last four coin tosses after tails won four in a row before then. So by that logic, tails might be due for a win. Also, if you’re betting on which team will win the coin toss, I prefer to go with the team that calls the toss, which will be the Rams.

The picks: Tails and Los Angeles to win the toss.

How to sort out the halftime show

I’ve written this article for a few years, and this year’s Super Bowl halftime show might be the hardest to get a gauge on. With five performers featured, there are so many variables to figure out.

The first question is who starts the show off? Bovada currently lists Dr. Dre as the favorite at +150, followed by Mary J. Blige at +200. However, I have a hard time seeing Dr. Dre start the show, and I could see Blige taking things over in the middle of the show.

It makes all the sense in the world to have Snoop Dogg start the show, as he’s arguably the most popular performer.

That leads me to my next bet: which song will be performed first? This is also a tricky one to determine, as a lot of these artists have collaborated on the same songs. “California Love” is the favorite at +200, but that song doesn’t involve Snoop Dogg.

So, I’m going with the second favorite, “The Next Episode,” which is listed at +375. This feels like a great song to start off any show, especially the Super Bowl halftime show. And, while it’s technically a Dr. Dre song, Snoop Dogg is the first person to perform on the track. Talk about correlation!

As for which songs Eminem will perform, I’d take a shot on “The Real Slim Shady,” to be his opening song, which is listed at +375.

And one final bet that I would only put literally a couple of dollars on: Snoop Dogg to smoke on stage, Yes +300. If this show goes as planned, at some point the lyrics “Smoke weed every day,” will be sung at the end of “The Next Episode.” Whether it’s the opening or closing song, it would be fitting for Snoop to pull out a joint and smoke on stage.

The picks: Snoop Dogg to perform first, The Next Episode to be the first song, The Real Slim Shady to be Eminem’s first song, and “Yes” on Snoop Dogg to smoke on stage.

What color will the Gatorade be?

For this bet, past history and team colors could be correlating. The Gatorade color dumped on the winning coach has been blue or orange in seven of the last 10 Super Bowls. Orange has won this best in 33.3% of Super Bowls since 2006.

Well, what colors do the Cincinnati Bengals wear? Orange! So if you think the Bengals will win the game, orange sounds like a pretty solid bet. If you think the Rams are going to win, I’d bet blue because it’s part of their team colors. That’s pretty decent logic, right?

The picks: Orange if you think Cincinnati wins, blue if you think Los Angeles wins.
