Sunday's Best WNBA Bets & Picks: Sun vs. Mystics
Sun-Mystics Under 40.5 First-Quarter Points (-118)
In the first contest of the day, we have a matchup flush with youth and opportunity. The Washington Mystics rely heavily on their top-scoring option, Brittany Sykes, and two rookies who have hit the ground running early into their WNBA careers. Whereas the Connecticut Sun are struggling to find an identity, yet managed a surprising win against the Atlanta Dream.
Our reasoning behind this selection is simply based on first-quarter scoring on the season, and these two teams have been limited, to say the least, in the opening frame of games. The Mystics and Sun make up two of the top three teams scoring the fewest amount of first-quarter points. They have combined to average 35.1 points in the first 10 minutes of play.
The Sun are averaging 15.7 points in the first quarter, while the Mystics score just shy of 20 points in the opening quarter when playing at home. There's a very solid chance the Sun and Mystics do not reach 41 combined points in the first quarter. Considering Washington and Connecticut are seemingly slow starters, the 40.5 first-quarter total comes across as a little too ambitious for our taste.
Marina Mabrey Over 16.5 Points (-108)
Marina Mabrey is performing at a mid-season comfort level over the first six games of the season for Connecticut, despite their struggles to win games. The 28-year-old is averaging a strong 17.4 points on the season, while connecting on 2.6 baskets each contest from beyond the arc.
Mabrey is coming off the most impressive outing of the season, scoring 34 points on Friday night against the Dream. This was the second-highest scoring total ever for the sharpshooter out of Notre Dame.
The Connecticut guard has scored 19+ points in four of the last six contests and has made 19 three-pointers over that span. The crafty veteran has also been highly efficient from the field in the previous four games, connecting on 50% of field-goal attempts in three of her last four contests.
Mabrey did not fare well at all in the first meeting between these two teams, only scoring 11 points in 35 minutes. However, the Connecticut Sun guard is in excellent form and looks to be in a fantastic spot to score over 16.5 points.
