The Blues and Jets meet for the third time in postseason franchise history. The Blues topped the Jets 3-1 in the 1981-82 Norris Division semi-finals in the first iteration of the Winnipeg franchise, while St. Louis won in six games in a first-round matchup in the 2018-19 postseason.
The Jets won the Presidents’ Trophy with 116 points, edging out the Washington Capitals (111), Vegas Golden Knights (110) and Toronto Maple Leafs (108) for the most points in the NHL. Winnipeg grabbed six of those points against St. Louis, winning the regular-season series 3-1.
Oddly enough, the starting goaltenders, Jordan Binnington for the Blues and Connor Hellebuyck for the Jets, met only once in those four meetings. Back on October 22nd at Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Hellebuyck and the Jets won 3-2 as moderate (-140) favorites as the under (5.5) came in.
St. Louis won 4-1 on December 3rd in Winnipeg, so the Blues have confidence they can win on Canada Life Centre ice. It’s more impressive that the Blues did it behind backup goalie Joel Hofer against Hellebuyck, who suffered only one of three regulation setbacks on home ice. He was a ridiculous 27-3-3 with a 1.63 GAA and .938 SV% with six shutouts in 33 starts at home, so that loss to the Blues in early December was arguably one of his most disappointing starts of the season.
The Blues have been red-hot for the better part of the past month, going 13-2-1 in the final 16 games of the regular season. One of those losses was on April 7th in Winnipeg, as Hellebuyck and the Jets skated away with a 3-1 win over Hofer and the Blues. Morgan Barron, Alex Iafallo and Adam Lowry each scored goals, while Pavel Buchnevich had the only goal for the visitors. Hellebuyck made just 14 saves in the home victory.
In recent seasons, it’s been bad luck to win the Presidents’ Trophy. The New York Rangers won last season, and they were bumped off in the Eastern Conference Finals. That’s a pretty good run, as the Boston Bruins lost in the first round in 2022-23, something the Jets would like to avoid. The last Presidents’ Trophy team to win the Stanley Cup was the Chicago Blackhawks back in 2012-13. Only one of the past 16 Presidents’ Trophy winners has hoisted the Cup.
There is a long way to go, and we don’t know how the Winnipeg Jets will fare. We only care about Game 1, and while it should be a low-scoring nail-biter, it’s hard to bet against Hellebuyck on home ice in this series opener.
In addition to the Jets Moneyline and the under, Kyle Connor streaks into the playoffs with three goals and six points in the past five outings, while Josh Morrissey has a pair of goals and six points in a four-game span, including a silly +7 rating. Either of those players is a good bet for an anytime goal scorer prop bet in Game 1. We’ll play it conservatively and go with Morrisey to simply notch a point, with Connor as an anytime goal scorer.
