British Open Odds & Picks: Best Round 4 Futures Bets
Royal Troon has yet to yield soft scoring conditions during the 152nd British Open. Billy Horschel is the solo leader heading into Sunday at 4-under-par, with plenty of big names chasing him for the coveted Claret Jug to wrap up the fourth and final major of the season.
In this article, we’re highlighting three golfers to target in the outright winner betting market ahead of Round 4. Each of these futures bets should receive half a unit per wager, so without further ado, let’s find out who we’re backing during the final round at Royal Troon on Sunday afternoon.
Justin Rose to finish top-five at -105 odds is still in play from our Round 3 Futures Bets article, while Patrick Cantlay finishing top-ten will require the Californian to go on a big run to counter his bad outing in Round 3. Xander Schauffele Outright Win (+350)
Xander Schauffele looks poised and calm playing in tough conditions on this links course. Maybe it’s due to finally breaking his major slump with the PGA Championship title back in May. Or it could be that Schauffele is the best scrambler on the PGA Tour.
He’s one stroke off the leader, Billy Horschel, at 3-under-par, bouncing back from a 1-over-par Round 2 on Saturday despite playing in a constant downpour. Ranked second in total strokes gained this week, including 10th SG: approach and 16th off-the-tee, there’s a reason oddsmakers have made Schauffele a slight betting favorite at the majority of sportsbooks.
A half unit returns 1.75 units of profit at +350 odds, so don’t hesitate to back one of the best ballstrikers and scramblers in contention ahead of Sunday’s final round from Royal Troon.
Billy Horschel Outright Win (+550)
Billy Horschel looked sharp in Round 3 and he could have an even bigger lead based on how well he was scrambling out of pot bunkers and fescue on Saturday.
The unlikely leader leads the field in total strokes gained, including sixth on approach, 14th around the green, and 17th off-the-tee. His putting hasn’t been as strong as we’re accustomed to seeing, however, Horschel’s play off-the-tee, on approach, and scrambling has more than made up for it.
At +550 odds, with a one-stroke lead, we’re landing a decent amount of value on Horschel. He’s won eight events on the PGA Tour before, although this would be his first major title, so expect Horschel to stay dialed in on Sunday.
Justin Rose Outright Win (+800)
It was a less than stellar outing from Justin Rose on Saturday, winding up 2-over-par with only one birdie, but the Englishman shouldn’t be written off entering Round 4. He’s only one stroke off the lead at T2 on the leaderboard thanks to a strong effort in Round 1 and Round 2.
Rose’s putter wasn’t cooperating in Round 3 but he’s still ranked fifth in total strokes gained, measuring inside of the top-30 in all four metrics. Scrambling and off-the-tee have been his best areas, while he endured the toughest stretch from holes 10-13 at even par in a steady downpour.
+800 odds is worth a half unit investment, so let’s back Rose to return to form in windy, drier conditions on Sunday, similar to when he played better in Round 1 and Round 2.
