Cameron Young 2023 PGA Championship: Best Bets & Predictions

The PGA Championship used to bat cleanup as the fourth and final major of the season, but this will be the fifth time that the PGA has been held in May, in between the Masters and the U.S. Open.

Justin Thomas is the defending champion. He shot a final-round 67 at Southern Hills last year and beat Will Zalatoris in a playoff to win the Wanamaker Trophy, the giant piece of hardware awarded annually to the PGA champ. Thomas and Brooks Koepka have combined to win four of the last six PGA Championships, with Collin Morikawa and Phil Mickelson interrupting the Thomas/Koepka reign in 2020 and 2021.

This year’s PGA Championship returns Oak Hill in Pittsford, N.Y., where Jason Dufner finished -10 to win the 2013 PGA, beating runner-up Jim Furyk by two strokes. But the East Course at Oak Hill will look much different than it did at the last PGA here 10 years ago. Course architect Andrew Green presided over a major remodeling intended to make the course more faithful to the original Donald Ross design. The course will once again play at par-70, and after playing at 7,163 yards in 2013, it has been stretched to 7,400 for this year’s event.

Will favorites Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler flex their muscles at Oak Hill? Will Thomas and Koepka extend their stretch of PGA dominance? Or will an unexpected winner emerge from the field the way Jimmy Walker did at Baltusrol in 2016? Read on for betting profiles of the top contenders for the 2023 PGA Championship.

Cameron Young Course History

Cameron Young is only in his second full season on the PGA Tour, so there’s not much to say about his prior PGA Championship history. However, Young shined in his only PGA Championship appearance, finishing T3 in his debut. Young showed poise at Southern Hills in 2022, firing back-to-back rounds of 67 to help him contend for the Wanamaker Trophy. He’ll look for a similar performance this year at Oak Hill.

Cameron Young Recent Form

Young has come on strong since turning pro in 2019, especially in the past year and a half. His stellar play over that time has helped him ascend to 15th in the World Golf Rankings. His 2023 has been solid so far, including three top-10 finishes and a runner-up finish at the Dell Technologies Match Play event. Although he has yet to break through for a win, Young’s name is frequently up there on the leaderboard going into the weekend. Young really got it going in February, where he finished T20 at the Genesis Invitational, followed by a T10 at the Arnold Palmer. Next, he made the cut at the Players Championship before stumbling home with a Sunday 74 to finish T51. After taking a couple of weeks off, Young seemed to find a groove. He had an impressive run at the matchplay event, taking down Rory McIlroy in the semifinals before falling to Sam Burns in the final. He carried the momentum into the Masters, where he finished T7. A Saturday 75 proved costly and kept him out of the final group after a strong first two rounds. Young has since lost some momentum, as he finished outside of the top 50 in his past two tournaments.

Cameron Young Betting Outlook

Young’s longest odds for the PGA Championship are +3500, which tells you a lot about this guy’s game. Young is one of the best in the game with the driver in his hands and has the stats back it up. He’s third on Tour in driving distance and 17th in strokes gained: tee to green. However, we know majors are won around the greens — an area that has been a bit of a struggle for Young this season. He’s 179th in scrambling, 176th in strokes gained: putting, and 148th in sand save % this season. It’s a must that he cleans it up around the greens if he wants to be out there late Sunday afternoon. Young has played some great golf this season, but I will be looking to stay away from any outright bets on him this week. Instead, I’ll be looking to back him in head-to-head matchups against shorter hitters, and a top-10/top-20 bet is worth a look for Young, as he’s still vying for his first win on Tour.
