Canelo Alvarez vs. Dmitry Bivol: Betting Odds, Picks, Preview

The WBA (Super) light-heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol +360 will look to be the latest to attempt to take out the pound-for-pound champion Canelo Alvarez -490 this weekend in Las Vegas, NV. Hosted on streaming service DAZN, this pay-per-view event will get started earlier than typical at 8 p.m. EST in order to make way for UFC 274 later in the evening.

In what will be just a three-fight card, Alvarez will look to add just the latest belt to his already-crowded closet. Let’s take a closer look at both fighters, and make a prediction on just how the evening could go.

These odds were taken from FanDuel Sportsbook on May 6, 2022

Canelo Alvarez (57-1-2) vs. Dmitry Bivol (19-0)

Despite both being 31 years of age, Alvarez, as usual, is carrying the attention heading into this fight. Turning pro at 15, Canelo has just one professional loss (Mayweather Jr. in 2013), and has fought in five different weight classes including the one he is on Saturday during a different stint (ended in 2019).

The current holder of four different belts including The Ring super middleweight, WBA (Super), WBO, and WBC, Canelo will look to add another and snatch another 0 in the form of Dmitry Bivol.

Despite being the heavy underdog, many are giving Bivol a chance in this fight due to his technical style and often lethal jab. One of Canelo’s biggest assets is his pace, constantly putting pressure on the other fighter; a feature of Bivol’s game that makes this matchup intriguing.

Presently in the prime of his own career having taken much less damage, if Bivol can stay clean early, he has the stamina to make this a real fight in the later rounds.

Bottom Line

Fighting in weight classes is much more known for fights going the distance than not, Canelo has been on a mission as of late. Over the past 18 months, Canelo has fought three times, ending all via stoppage against Caleb Plant, Callum Smith, and Billy Joe Saunders.

While I expect Bivol to be competitive in the early rounds, expect the experience and talent of Canelo to reign supreme once again, as he likely gets a stoppage in the later rounds.

Pick: Canelo Alvarez -490
