Chicago Bears vs. Los Angeles Rams Odds & Game Pick (2020)

The Chicago Bears are doing it again. Much like 2018, the Bears in 2020 are winning with great defense and just enough offense. The 2018 Bears relied on Khalil Mack and Kyle Fuller, and the rest of a vicious defense to throttle opposing offenses. By making few mistakes on offense, the Bears entrusted games to their defense and were able to win enough games to make the playoffs. That scenario is coming into full view once again. Nick Foles hasn’t been spectacular, but he has been solid enough to lift the Bears to point totals in the low 20s – 20 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday Night Football, then 23 this past Sunday against the Carolina Panthers. The Bears’ defense allowed under 20 points in each of those games, and Chicago is now 5-1.

The Los Angeles Rams are 4-2, but they are very much a mystery in the NFL for reasons which are easier to explain than you might think. The Rams might be a playoff contender right now, but how good they are is still an open question. We’ll explain below. This game against the Bears will certainly offer a good indication of where these teams stand.

Overview

The Bears – like 2018 – are winning with a defense-first formula and a low-mistake approach on offense. They try not to give games away, and they’re succeeding. The Bears don’t look like a complete team, but they’re doing enough to win. They overcame big deficits early in the season against the Lions and Falcons, and having escaped those two games, this team is playing with a much higher level of confidence. If the Bears can go into L.A. and beat the Rams, they will have even more assurance that they’ll be able to make a run at the NFC title.

The Los Angeles Rams are 4-2, but no one knows how good they are for a very simple reason: The Rams’ four wins have all come against one division, the NFC East. That’s right: The Rams have already played the Cowboys, Eagles, Washington Football Team, and the Giants. They won all four games. In their two games outside the NFC East, they are 0-2. When you realize that the 2-4 Cowboys lead the NFC East and that the Cowboys’ only wins came against the 1-5 Giants and the 1-5 Falcons – with the win against the Falcons emerging only because Atlanta failed to cover an onside kick – it becomes apparent just how horrible the NFC East truly is. The Rams going 4-0 against that division is not a special achievement; it merely means doing what was expected. The Rams have not yet beaten a remotely good team this year. The Bears, therefore, represent a much better test.

Trends

  • Chicago is 6-12 ATS in its last 18 games.
  • The total has hit the under in four of the Bears’ last five games.
  • The Rams are 5-2 straight up in their last seven games.

Bottom Line

The Rams are untested. They haven’t beaten a quality team. The Bears have a 5-1 record but played poorly in their first four games before making significant improvements in their last two outings. How good are these teams? It’s hard to know, but the Rams – who are coming off a loss to the San Francisco 49ers – know they can’t lose two in a row. The game will be close and the Bears will cover the spread, but the Rams will win outright.

Prediction: Rams 20, Bears 17
