Chicago Bears vs Washington Redskins NFL Sports Betting Guide

The 1-1 Chicago Bears will travel to the nation’s capital to take on the winless Washington Redskins on Monday Night Football. Before the season began, we would be surprised to find out that Washington would have had more offensive success than Chicago through two weeks. But with the freakishly athletic front seven of Chicago wrecking havoc, this game is expected to be yet another low-scoring prime time game.

Overview

The Bears opened the season with a home loss to the Green Bay Packers, then won on a last-second field goal against the Denver Broncos last week. The criticism of the Bears has been constant and focused on one player: Mitchell Trubisky. The third-year quarterback has held this offense back, with 27.8 percent of his passes being labeled uncatchable, second to only Cam Newton. This has led to Chicago averaging just 263.5 yards, which is the third-worst in the league. Their saving grace has been their defense, which has given up only 292.5 yards per game (fourth in the NFL) and 12.0 points per game (third in the NFL). It’s clear that it will need to be the defense leading the way if they are to go far this season.

One of the bigger surprises this season has been the Washington offense, led by Case Keenum. He has completed 69 percent of his passes for 601 yards and five touchdowns, protecting the football. The run offense, on the other hand, has been abysmal. Veteran Adrian Peterson leads the way with 25 yards. The starting running back, Derrius Guice, is out with a knee injury, but he only averaged 1.8 yards per carry in the first game, too. As bad as they are running the football, they seem to be just as bad stopping the run, giving up 168 rushing yards per game (second-worst in the NFL). If they do not improve their run defense, it could be a long game on Monday night.

First Half Total: Under 20 (+105)
This is a low first-half total, but it may not be low enough with this matchup. The Bears have scored nine total first-half points this season and have given up just 10. Offensively, Trubisky has been horrendous in prime time games under Matt Nagy. Over this five-game span, the quarterback has averaged just 174.4 yards per game and has a 3:6 touchdown-interception ratio. The Bears will lean on the running game early to take pressure off of Trubisky, but it will also drain the clock quickly. I like the first half spread for Chicago too, but the under is the more profitable bet.

Bottom Line

If Washington cannot stop the run, they have no chance to win this game. Rookie David Montgomery has seen his workload increase over the first two weeks (seven and 19 touches), and the training wheels may fully be off in this one. We know Chicago will get after Keenum with their pass rush, which should limit their passing game, shutting down this offense.

Pick: Chicago -4, Under 41.5
