Don’t look now, but the Oakland Raiders are in the thick of the AFC West division title race. Coming off back-to-back wins over the Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Chargers, the Raiders suddenly find themselves just a win back of the Kansas City Chiefs for first place. The Chiefs hold the tiebreaker, but who figured these two squads would (or could) be tied with the same record this late in the season?

Oakland will have an excellent opportunity to at least temporarily close the gap on Kansas City (Chiefs play on Monday Night Football) when the winless Cincinnati Bengals roll into town on Sunday afternoon. Can Oakland do something they haven’t really been asked to do in a long time, cover a big number?

Overview

The first game of the Ryan Finlay era didn’t exactly go as planned for Cincinnati in last week’s 49-13 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. The rookie quarterback was held to just 167 passing yards with one touchdown and one interception in his first career start. Running back Joe Mixon had a season-high 151 scrimmage yards, but it didn’t make a difference in the Bengals’ most lopsided loss of the year. Cincinnati has been outscored by an average margin of 13.6 points per game this season and has lost each of its last three games by double-digits.

Meanwhile, the Raiders have strung together back-to-back wins for the second time this season to improve to 5-4. After a brutal start to the year, Oakland has one of the easiest remaining schedules in the NFL with only one more game against an opponent that currently owns a winning record. Derek Carr completed 67.7% of his pass attempts for 218 yards and a touchdown in last week’s 26-24 win over the Chargers. Rookie running back Josh Jacobs has been a beast all season, including 101 scrimmage yards and a score against Los Angeles last week. Now they’ll go up against the league’s worst run defense, which is allowing just over 170 rushing yards per game. When the Raiders can run the ball and Jacobs plays well, it usually means good things for them.

Trends

  • Bengals have lost 10 straight road games
  • Under has hit in Cincinnati’s last 5 road games
  • Bengals are 8-0 ATS in last 8 in Pacific Time Zone
  • Oakland is 7-1 ATS in its last 8 home games
  • Raiders are 6-1 SU in last 7 home games versus Bengals
  • Oakland is 6-3 ATS overall this season

Bottom Line

With the combination of Oakland coming off back-to-back wins, playing at home, and in the midst of a push for first place in the division, this game feels like it has blowout written all over it. The Bengals might get A.J. Green back in this one, but how much will it matter? Their offensive line has been terrible, giving up the fifth-most sacks per game (3.4), and the run defense has had no answers. Green can only do so much, and he might be rusty since it’s his first game of the year.

While the Raiders haven’t won by a double-digit margin yet this season, they also haven’t played Cincinnati. Expect this to be a big win for Oakland.

Prediction: Raiders 30, Bengals 13
