Cleveland Browns vs. New York Giants Odds and Game Pick (2020)

The Cleveland Browns don’t appear on Sunday Night Football very often, but they got flexed into a Sunday night game while the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys were moved out of the Sunday Night Football slot and into an early afternoon game. The Browns are growing in quality, and that means their popularity in the NFL is increasing. Cleveland will try to perform well in the prime-time spotlight when it goes to the Meadowlands to face the New York Giants. The injury report is something you will want to pay close attention to in the days before kickoff.

Overview

The Browns and the Baltimore Ravens just played the NFL’s best game of the 2020 season on Monday Night Football. The Ravens and Lamar Jackson took a 34-20 lead late in the third quarter, and when Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield threw an interception, Cleveland seemed done. However, the Browns fought back, all while Jackson missed two consecutive possessions due to cramps. He was replaced by backup quarterback Trace McSorley. However, McSorley got injured. All this time, the Browns and Mayfield roared back to take a 35-34 lead. Cleveland showed that it was not afraid of a Ravens team that went 14-2 in the 2019 NFL season.

Lamar Jackson, though not 100-percent fit, was able to come back into the game and throw a long touchdown pass on fourth down to give Baltimore a 42-35 lead. The Browns, however, did not quit. They could have sulked, but they instead fought back to tie the score at 42-42 with 1:04 left. The Ravens were able to move down the field and set up their future Hall of Fame kicker Justin Tucker. With two seconds left, Tucker nailed a 55-yard field goal to give Baltimore the win. The Browns didn’t capture the game, but they certainly earned a large share of respect for going toe to toe with a good team for 60 minutes.

The Browns have to avoid the classic letdown after a Monday game and a tough loss. That was an exhausting game versus the Ravens. The Browns need to be mentally refreshed.

You will want to pay close attention to the Giants’ injury report. Quarterback Daniel Jones has been listed on Friday afternoon as questionable for this game. The same is true for New York tight end Evan Engram. If they can play, especially Engram, the Giants’ offense has more of a chance to do something in this game. If Engram can’t play, New York’s range of possibilities would be limited, and the under total would probably go down. You’ll want to watch the spread and the total and keep your eyes focused on the Giants’ injury status.

Trends

  • The Browns are 4-9-1 ATS in their last 14 games following an ATS loss.
  • The Giants are 8-21-1 ATS in their last 30 home games.
  • The Giants are 3-13 ATS in their last 16 games as a home underdog.

Bottom Line

With or without Daniel Jones and Evan Engram, the Giants aren’t that likely to score a lot versus the Browns’ defense. The key here is Baker Mayfield avoiding mistakes against a good Giants defense which shut down Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks two weeks ago, limiting the Seattle offense to only 10 points in Seattle. The Giants’ defense could keep this game close, but if Mayfield makes good decisions, Cleveland should be able to win this game comfortably.

Pick: Browns -6.5
