Coastal Carolina Chanticleers vs. UMass Minutemen Odds & Game Pick (2021)

Coastal Carolina is one of my favorite teams to bet on because they are 15-1 in their last sixteen games. That stat will get better this week, but there is no value with -10,000 odds, which means we will need to look elsewhere for the betting value. Both of these teams are awful against the spread, which will mean that we have to look deep into this game to see what team has the advantage. Bettors will need to look into these components going into this matchup.

Overview

Coastal Carolina is an explosive offense. They are scoring 43 points per game. Grayson McCall has been excellent this year, completing 78% of his passes. Coastal Carolina is efficient, and UMass will struggle to stop this offense. UMass is already giving up 526 yards on average to opposing offenses. Coastal Carolina has played better defenses than UMass this season. They are still averaging 508 yards per game, which means they will move the ball against UMass. Expect Coastal Carolina to score a lot of points in this game.

Defensively, Coastal Carolina has some weaknesses. They are giving up almost 21 points per game. Outside of the Citadel game, they are also giving up a little over 400 yards per game. Both of these teams combined are allowing over 900 yards per game. That means there is going to be a lot of offense going on in this matchup. UMass will have opportunities to move the ball against this defense. Coastal Carolina struggled with the run, which showed in their close game with Buffalo last week. Running the ball will create opportunities for UMass to score.

UMass is averaging 21 points per game, scoring 28 points against a Boston College team that is better defensively than Coastal Carolina shows that UMass can score. Back-up QB Brady Wilson has been playing well for UMass, but there is a chance that starting QB Tyler Lytle comes back. Tyler Lytles’ experience will add an extra dimension to the UMass offense if he plays. RB Ellis Merriweather is averaging 5.4 yards per rush. With Coastal Carolina struggling to stop the run, Merriweather will create opportunities for UMass to get in the endzone.

Bottom Line

Recently both of these teams have been terrible against the spread, which means we will want to look elsewhere for the value of play in this game. Together these teams have a combined 16/22 record against the over. With the lack of defense and Coastal Carolina’s explosive offense, the over is the best value. Coastal is scoring an average of 43 points per game, and we should see them get into the high forties or low fifties this week. That means UMass needs to score 14-17 points to cover the rest. The over will be the best value in this game.

Pick: Total Over 66 (-110)
