Q: Who’s your favorite value to win the 2020 College Basketball National Championship?

Michigan State Spartans (+1500)
You will have read a litany of articles all telling you about what recipe makes a national champion. You will hear that most winners have a good coach, have a strong point guard, have senior leadership, can shoot, and are top four in ESPN BPI. You will also hear that aside from outliers – Looking at you, UConn – the tournament winner has ranked inside the top 20 of adjusted offensive and defensive efficiency. Michigan State has Tom Izzo, Cassius Winston (A Senior PG with 3P% of 43.2%), ranks fourth in ESPN BPI, 10th in KenPom adjusted offense, and 13th in adjusted defense. They check all of the boxes. While Kansas deserves to be the favorite, give me Michigan State at +1500 for big value.

Michigan State is playing its best basketball of the season, yet you can still get better odds than in the presason when it was around +700. Kansas is the best overall team, but I’m not sure that’s worth the price at +600. The Spartans have the tools to win it all, ranking well both offensively and defensively. They have a defensive presence in Xavier Tillman who can handle most bigs in the country and Cassius Winston who takes over when the game gets tight. Throw in freshmen Malik Hall and Rocket Watts, who provide offensive upside, and Aaron Henry, who does a little bit of everything well, and that may be all that’s needed to win six games. Oh, and Tom Izzo.

Duke Blue Devils (+1700)
There is no doubt Duke has stumbled down the stretch, losing three of its last six games. They have a great opportunity to build momentum by winning the ACC Tournament in front of their home fans in Greensboro. If they were to go through Florida State and either Louisville or Virginia in the conference championship, you may not be able to get Duke odds at better than +900. The metrics love Duke, as they rank in the top 12 in the nation in both adjusted offensive and defensive efficiency, per KenPom. They have two of the best nonconference wins over Kansas and Michigan State. Coach K is one of the best ever to roam the sidelines, and he may have figured something out over the last two games. The Blue Devils have been playing much smaller, surrounding Vernon Carey with four knockdown shooters. We will see how the new rotation looks in the ACC Tournament, but if they continue to play well they are going to be a team nobody wants to see in their bracket.
