Best Bet to Win the Big 12

Oklahoma is the frontrunner for winning the Big 12 championship. Lincoln Riley has won every conference title since taking the head coaching job in 2017. The current odds of -180 are a great value with a coach that has never lost the conference.

Heisman hopeful Spencer Rattler has grown to be one of the most dynamic quarterbacks in college football. With weapons like wide receiver Marvin Mims, running back Kennedy Brooks, and transfer running back Eric Gray, Oklahoma will have one of the most explosive offenses in college football.

Oklahoma thrives on offense. Lincoln Riley’s system has produced two Heisman quarterbacks in the four years he has been head coach. He might have even had three if it wasn’t for a guy named Joe Burrow. Spencer Rattler will be something special this year. Scouts already think he is the #1 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. The young quarterback has the talent, the weapons, and the system. Teams are going to struggle to stop Spencer Rattler and company.

The real question is which Oklahoma defense from last year will show up. In the first three games of conference play, Oklahoma was giving up an average of 40 points per game. Compared to the last six games, they were giving up an average of 16.5 points per game. The reason for the improvement? Nik Bonitto and Isaiah Thomas. Nik Bonitto led all FBS edge defenders in pass-rush grade (93.6), pass-rush win rate (28%), and pressure generated (25.7%). Isaiah Thomas was third in the nation with ten sacks and tenth in total pressures. Add one of the best cornerbacks nationally in Woodi Washington, and you have a defense that can give even the best teams some issues.

The biggest question to Oklahoma taking the conference this year is Iowa State. Matt Campbell has been one of the best college football coaches since joining Iowa State in 2016. Preseason ranked #7. It looks like Iowa State could be a real threat to taking the conference title this year.

Brock Purdy leading the offense with Breece Hall in the backfield is enough to make a good offense. Pair that with Mike Rose and Greg Eisworth II on defense, and you have a football team that looks good on both sides of the ball. These guys have experience and have beaten Oklahoma at Oklahoma before.

Iowa State has a tough road this year. Playing #16 Iowa, #19 Texas, #20 Oklahoma State all before they face #6 Oklahoma at the end of the year. Iowa State will have to do something they have never done before and play a complete season of great football. Oklahoma has shown they can play a whole season. Lincoln Riley and Heisman hopeful Spencer Rattler are the clear favorites.

Pick: Oklahoma (-180)
