College Football Power Rankings: Week 5 (2019)

Teams made a number of statements in an exciting Week 4 of NCAAF action. The AP and Coaches polls have seen a good deal of movement as a result. This week’s power rankings are in line with the pollsters on the top-10 teams in the nation, but that’s not the case further down the list. Let’s take a look.

25) Michigan Wolverines, 2-1
There’s no way to sugarcoat it for the Wolverines. The team was flat-out embarrassed at Wisconsin on Saturday. We’ll see how the program responds.

24) UCF Knights, 3-1
After a big win over Stanford, Saturday’s road game at Pittsburgh had all the makings of a trap game for the Knights. The club fell right in for its first loss of the season.

23) Utah Utes, 3-1
The Utes were looking like the class of the Pac-12. Then Friday night’s road loss to USC happened. Even more concerning, stud RB Zack Moss went down to injury and could be out for awhile.

22) Wake Forest Demon Deacons, 4-0
The Demon Deacons are quietly undefeated as they get set for Saturday’s road date at Boston College. The list of victims isn’t too impressive, but this squad is putting up points in bunches.

21) Kansas State Wildcats, 3-0
The Wildcats had the week off after a massive road victory over Mississippi State. The team gets back at it this week with another challenging away game at Oklahoma State.

20) Michigan State Spartans, 3-1
The Spartans offense finally woke up over the weekend with a 31-10 road win over Northwestern. Brian Lewerke threw for three scores while the stout Michigan State defense forced three picks.

19)  USC Trojans, 3-1
After dropping a heartbreaker to BYU, the Trojans were being dismissed as Pac-12 contenders. The team put an end to that with a huge home win over Utah in Week 4.

18) Virginia Cavaliers, 4-0
The Cavaliers are undefeated as they get set for a tough road date with Notre Dame this week. They’re big underdogs for that one, but they’re also looking like the team to watch out of the ACC Coastal.

17) Boise State Broncos, 4-0
Now that UCF has been knocked off, Boise State takes the mantle of the top Group of Five team for 2019. The team is off this week before heading to UNLV in Week 6.

16) California Bears, 4-0
The Bears weren’t supposed to go into SEC country and walk away with a win, but that’s exactly what they did with a 28-20 victory over Ole Miss. Next up is a home date with Arizona State.

15) Iowa Hawkeyes, 3-0
Iowa had the week off after their 1-point win over Iowa State. The team welcomes Middle Tennessee on Saturday before heading to Michigan on October 5 with a chance to make a statement.

14) Penn State Nittany Lions, 3-0
The Nittany Lions were also off this weekend. Last time out, it was a 7-point home win over Pittsburgh. On Friday night, the team takes its undefeated record into Maryland.

13) Washington Huskies, 3-1
The Huskies’ loss to Cal doesn’t look so bad anymore. The Pac-12 is looking like a parity party in 2019, but Washington gets a chance to make a statement when USC comes to town this week.

12) Oregon Ducks, 3-1
The Ducks have put the heartbreaking loss to Auburn behind them and won three in a row. They’ll have an extra week to prepare before a home date with Cal next weekend.

11) Texas Longhorns, 3-1
The Longhorns hung on for a six-point win over visiting Oklahoma State on Saturday night. The lone loss on the year came at the hands of an LSU team which is playing like one of the best in the nation.

10) Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 2-1
A playoff invite is unlikely for the Fighting Irish after Saturday’s loss at Georgia. However, the team showed a lot while keeping the final margin of victory to six points.

9) Florida Gators, 4-0
The Gators destroyed visiting Tennessee on Saturday to the tune of 34-3. The team gets a tune-up with Towson this week before back-to-back games versus Auburn and LSU.

8) Wisconsin Badgers, 4-0
The Badgers hammered visiting Michigan by a score of 35-14. The game was nowhere near as close as the final score suggests. This team will have a lot to say in the Big Ten this season.

7) Auburn Tigers, 4-0
The Tigers picked up a convincing road win over Texas A&M to remain undefeated. They welcome Mississippi State this week before hitting the road for three straight.

6) Oklahoma Sooners, 3-0
The Sooners had the week off after pounding UCLA in Week 3. The offense remains as potent as ever with Jalen Hurts behind center. The club plays host to Texas Tech on Saturday.

5) Ohio State Buckeyes, 4-0
The Buckeyes have yet to be challenged this season while racking up four straight huge wins. It’s Big Ten play from here on out, starting with a road date at Nebraska.

4) LSU Tigers, 4-0
Through four games, Joe Burrow has thrown for 1,520 yards while completing 80.6 percent of his passes and accounting for 18 scores. He’s just part of the reason the Tigers are looking like contenders.

3) Georgia Bulldogs, 4-0
The Bulldogs head into a bye week with a perfect record after Saturday’s hard-fought win over Notre Dame. A road date with Tennessee is up next in Week 6.

2) Alabama Crimson Tide, 4-0
Ole Miss comes to town on Saturday as huge underdogs. The Crimson Tide are as loaded as ever. Tua Tagovailoa has thrown 17 TDs and completed 77.7 percent of his passes without throwing a pick.

1) Clemson Tigers, 4-0
There don’t appear to be any challenges looming on the horizon for the rest of the regular season for Clemson. The team heads to North Carolina this week as 26.5-point favorites.

The Next 5

Texas A&M Aggies, Washington State Cougars, Memphis Tigers, SMU Mustangs, Oklahoma State Cowboys
The Aggies are 2-2 with losses to Clemson and Auburn and a number of tough games remaining. The Tigers and Mustangs could break through soon if their winning ways continue. The Cougars and Cowboys have blemishes, but both squads should remain factors in their respective conferences.
