College Football Power Rankings: Week 7 (2019)

Six weeks into the NCAAF regular season, there’s clear separation at the top. Both Alabama and Clemson were off this past weekend, but their spots as the top two programs remain safe. The race for the next two slots, and presumably the final two spots in the College Football Playoffs, continues to intensify. Here’s how the top-25 teams in the nation stack up as we get set for Week 7.

25) Cincinnati Bearcats, 4-1
As a 42-0 drubbing at Ohio State earlier this year indicates, Cincinnati is a ways away from the top tier programs. However, Friday night’s victory over UCF demonstrates this club is a big factor in the Group of Five.

24) Virginia Cavaliers, 4-1
The Cavaliers had the week off after suffering their first loss of the year at Notre Dame. They’ll get back to building their case as the best ACC program not named Clemson with a tilt at Miami on Friday.

23) Minnesota Golden Gophers, 5-0
AP voters have the Golden Gophers on the outside looking in, but the Coaches have taken notice of the undefeated squad that’s tied for the Big Ten West lead. They’re home to take on Nebraska this week.

22) Memphis Tigers, 5-0
The Tigers remain perfect on the year and are squarely in the mix for what shapes up to be a competitive AAC race this season. The team has an interesting test this week as they hit the road to take on Temple.

21) Baylor Bears, 5-0
A week after picking up a 2-point home win over Iowa State, the Bears went on the road and handled business versus Kansas State as slight underdogs. Next up is a home date with Texas Tech.

20) SMU Mustangs, 6-0
Tulsa had the Mustangs on the ropes, but the team stormed back with 21 points in the final quarter to force overtime. SMU remains perfect on the year after a thrilling win in triple overtime.

19) Wake Forest Demon Deacons, 5-0
The Demon Deacons were off over the weekend after a 3-point road win over Boston College in Week 5. The team will be home for its next three in a row, so we’ll see how long the perfect run lasts.

18) Iowa Hawkeyes, 4-1
The Hawkeyes went to Ann Arbor on Saturday and got locked in a defensive struggle with Michigan, dropping a 10-3 decision. A tough home date with Penn State is on tap this weekend.

17) Arizona State Sun Devils, 4-1
The Sun Devils are one of many Pac-12 teams jockeying for position, but the team’s stout defense suggests they’ll be in the mix. They welcome Washington State to town on Saturday.

16) Utah Utes, 4-1
The Utes are another 1-loss team from the Pac-12, which should continue to be in the mix as the season moves along. A road trip to Oregon State is up next, followed by a home tilt with Arizona State.

15) Boise State Broncos, 5-0
The Broncos continue to roll. They picked up their third straight double-digit win on Saturday with a 38-13 road victory over UNLV. This week brings an interesting home game versus Hawaii.

14) Michigan Wolverines, 4-1
The Wolverines have picked themselves up after getting embarrassed by Wisconsin, and they have won their last two in a row. They have a good shot at running the streak to three when they visit Illinois this week.

13) Oregon Ducks, 4-1
The Ducks were home to welcome Cal on Saturday and managed to escape with a 17-7 win as 21.5-point favorites. They’ll be home to take on Colorado on Friday night.

12) Auburn Tigers, 5-1
The undefeated run is over, but the Tigers will still have something to say about how the SEC shakes out. Saturday’s loss to Florida was the beginning of a three-game road swing, which ends with a trip to LSU.

11) Texas Longhorns, 4-1
The Longhorns were naturally hoping to be undefeated heading into this year’s showdown with Oklahoma, but a loss to LSU isn’t the worst thing in the world with the way the Tigers have been rolling.

10) Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 4-1
As expected, the Fighting Irish hammered visiting Bowling Green on Saturday. A 52-0 win in a glorified scrimmage serves as a warm-up for a tough stretch versus USC and Michigan.

9) Penn State Nittany Lions, 5-0
Purdue was the latest victim for the Nittany Lions as the team kept its mark unblemished on the year. We’ll learn a lot about Penn State over the next three: at Iowa, home for Michigan, at Michigan State.

8) Wisconsin Badgers, 5-0
The Badgers pounded visiting Kent State on Saturday by a score of 48-0. Jonathan Taylor continues to run over everything in his path as the team gets set for a home date with Michigan State.

7) Florida Gators, 6-0
The Gators were 2.5-point home underdogs for the game with Auburn, but they answered the call in resounding fashion with a 24-13 win. This week presents another daunting challenge with a trip to LSU.

6) LSU Tigers, 5-0
The Tigers continued to roll with a 42-6 home win over Utah State on Saturday. Joe Burrow has tossed a ridiculous 22 TDs versus just three picks thus far, but the sledding will get tougher against Florida next week.

5) Oklahoma Sooners, 5-0
Jalen Hurts is another top Heisman contender with 21 total scores versus two picks for the undefeated Sooners. They’re currently 10-point favorites for the showdown with Texas.

4) Georgia Bulldogs, 5-0
The Bulldogs clobbered Tennessee on Saturday by a score of 45-13. Home dates with South Carolina and Kentucky are up next, followed by a crucial tilt with Florida to decide the SEC East.

3) Ohio State Buckeyes, 6-0
Michigan State came to town this weekend and fell by a score of 34-10. The Buckeyes are looking like a very dangerous team as Big Ten play heats up. A road date at Northwestern is up next.

2) Clemson Tigers, 5-0
The Tigers got the weekend off after a scare at North Carolina. A home date with Florida State kicks off the second half of the season. Clemson is home for four of its final seven and will be big favorites for all.

1) Alabama Crimson Tide, 5-0
The Crimson Tide were also off over the weekend. They get back in action with an interesting road test at Texas A&M. That’s followed by three straight at home, a span that wraps with a visit from LSU.

The Next 5

Missouri Tigers, Appalachian State Mountaineers, Tulane Green Wave, Arizona Wildcats, Texas A&M Aggies
The lower reaches of the polls continue to take shape, and the same can be said for our power rankings. Several big tilts are on tap for this weekend, so we’ll see even more shuffling once Week 7 is in the books.
