College Football Week 6 Odds, Picks & Prediction: Friday
Nebraska vs. Rutgers
This weekâs Big Ten Conference schedule gets underway one day earlier as Nebraska travels to Rutgers on Friday night in Piscataway, New Jersey.
All five games of the series have been won by the visiting Cornhuskers (2-3, 1-1), with their most recent victory occurring on the road on December 18, 2020. Since then, Nebraska hasnât won a game away from Lincoln, suffering six straight losses now. Nebraska just defeated Indiana 35-21 at home, snapping a nine-game losing streak to FBS opponents. It was Mickey Josephâs first victory as the teamâs interim coach after Scott Frost was sacked three games into the season.
After going undefeated prior to Big Ten competition, Rutgers (3-2, 0-2) has had a difficult start to league action. The previous week, the Scarlet Knights lost 27-10 to Iowa at home before losing 49-10 to Ohio State on Saturday. In fact, the Scarlett Knights have now scored just 58 points in total through their four FBS games.
While this total has already ticked down, I donât think far enough for two putrid offenses.
Houston vs. Memphis
Memphis just defeated Temple 24-3 last week as they head into this AAC rivalry game. The Tigers raced to victory despite a sloppy first half in which they were held without a point for the first time since 2017. With a victory on Friday, the Tigers (4-1, 2-0 AAC) can maintain their lead in the standings of the conference and all but eliminate Houstonâs prospects of returning to the league championship game.
In the fourth quarter last week, Houston (2-3, 0-1 AAC) scored 14 straight points before Tulane scored a TD with 39 seconds left to tie the game. In overtime, the Cougars chose to receive the ball first and attempted a field goal, but Tulane ultimately prevailed thanks to a game-winning touchdown pass during their possession.
In the losing effort, quarterback Clayton Tune threw for 208 yards and two touchdowns, becoming just the fourth Houston player in history to achieve 10,000 career total yards. In their 30-game history with the Tigers, Houston has prevailed in 16 of the contests, with exactly half coming home and away. I think much of this line is built on teams of the past, something Houston coach Dana Holgerson certainly wishes he had.
Memphis rolls at home.
Colorado State vs. Nevada
On the surface, this play makes no sense. Nevada, the home team, is 2-3 and has beaten two FBS teams. Colorado State is 0-4, hasnât come within 15 points of any opponent, and lost 41-10 to an FCS team last time out.
This is CSU HC Jay Norvellâs return to Nevada â he recruited a majority of the players on Nevadaâs roster. Norvell also took 11 Nevada players with him in the transfer portal, along with most of its coaching staff. Arguably, CSU knows Nevadaâs personnel better than any opponent will know any otherâs all season.
And speaking to CSUâs personnel, it will be stronger on Friday than perhaps at any point all season. Norvellâs slow start there is partly attributable to shoddy OL play: Despite playing one less game than most teams, CSU leads the nation with 25 sacks allowed and is last in the country in rushing YPG and YPC.
Impossible to get the Air Raid going if youâre allowing six sacks a game, amirite? CSUâs offensive line was decimated by injuries over the first month. During the 0-4 start, they started a different offensive line configuration each time. But reports out of CSU this week suggest that the Rams are getting back both starting offensive tackles from injuries this week.
Not only that, but CSU believes thereâs a decent chance theyâll be getting back four previously-injured defensive starters for this game â a DT, a CB, and both safeties.
Nevadaâs fluky 2-0 start came courtesy of opening the season against New Mexico State and Texas State, two of the FBSâ 15-worst teams. Since then, Nevada has lost to FCS Incarnate Word (by 14), Iowa (by 27), and Air Force (28 points).
With an intact offensive line, you take CSUâs talent over Nevadaâs all day long. This is a circled game for CSUâs staff. And that staff â and 11 of its players â know the opponent like the back of their hand. Give us the Rams to win their first game of the year.
