College Football Week 8 Odds, Picks & Prediction: Louisiana-Monroe vs. Army

I love how UL-Monroe matches up in this spot.

The Warhawks’ biggest strength — by far – is a run defense that ranks No. 20 in success rate. ULM’s pass defense is horrific, but that’s okay, because Army’s triple-option offense won’t be testing it.

Army has been a big disappointment this year, in part attributable to a slow acclimation to rule changes banning cut blocks outside the tackle box. The Black Knights are 2-4, but 0-4 against FBS teams, with three double-digit losses. Army scheduled two FCS teams. Those are the two wins.

UL-Monroe has been playing better ball of late, but not many have noticed. The past two times out, the Warhawks have lost by exactly seven points to Coastal Carolina and South Alabama. Those teams who are a combined 11-2.

Triple-option attacks are very hard to prepare for on short notice. If you haven’t yet faced one. But ULM has already played two, FCS Nicholls State and Coastal, ULM blew out the FCS team and kept it close in an easy cover against the Chanticleers.

Nothing Army does will surprise ULM, and the Warhawks are equipped to slow it down. I think ULM gets over the hump and pulls off the outright upset on Saturday.
