Dallas Cowboys at Philadelphia Eagles Odds & Game Pick

The Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles will square off on Sunday in a game that is likely to decide the NFC East for 2019. The Cowboys will clinch the East with a victory while the Eagles would need to win again in Week 17 but have a very favorable matchup against the New York Giants. These teams have both been maddeningly inconsistent over the course of the season, so it all comes down to this game to resolve a battle that has been sloppy, ugly, and hard to watch. If Jason Garrett wants to have any possible chance of remaining head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, he has to win this game. The Cowboys are laying just 1.5 points, and the line has moved toward the Eagles since it opened. What will happen on Sunday in Philadelphia?

Overview

The Cowboys surprised a lot of people - not merely by beating the defending NFC champion Los Angeles Rams this past Sunday, but by blowing out the Rams. Dallas took an early lead and steadily pulled away from the Rams, likely knocking them out of the playoffs. The Rams had a lot to play for and yet the Cowboys destroyed them, 44-21. The Cowboys have been inconsistent this season, but this was one of their best efforts of the season. Just one week after being embarrassed by the Chicago Bears, they played a complete game. Dallas's offense was anemic on Thanksgiving Day against the Buffalo Bills, and the defense was shredded by the Chicago Bears one week later. The win over the Rams witnessed the Cowboys at their best, a team which can do legitimate damage in the playoffs - if they get there.

The Eagles are not playing nearly as well as the Cowboys did against the Rams. Philadelphia trailed Washington for portions of this past weekend's game but managed to score a very late touchdown and escape with a season-saving win. The Eagles' offensive line has been wrecked by injuries, with Lane Johnson being in and out of the lineup. The receiving corps has been decimated as well. We've seen them scrape by in back-to-back weeks, barely edging the New York Giants in overtime the week before. Even though they were among the Super Bowl favorites heading into the season, they've looked nothing like it since then.

Trends

  • Cowboys are 9-1 ATS in their last 10 games after allowing more than 250 yards passing in their previous game.
  • Cowboys are 16-5 ATS in their last 21 vs. NFC East.
  • Cowboys are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games after scoring more than 30 points in their previous game.
  • Eagles are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games after accumulating more than 150 yards rushing in their previous game.
  • Eagles are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games following an ATS win.

Bottom Line

The Cowboys are the healthier team and should be the more talented team at this point, but they've got some serious question marks with coaching and kicking. As for the Eagles, they're at home in this spot and Doug Pederson is a better coach than Garrett (although Pederson is somewhat on the hot seat too), but they have a slew of injuries on offense.

At this point, it's just hard to trust the Eagles given what they've shown the last few weeks. They lost to the Miami Dolphins, barely beat the Giants in a game they hosted, and needed a last-second miracle to beat Washington. If they had any glimmer of togetherness, they would have pummeled one of the three teams they faced in their last three games. Given that they couldn't, I don't see them winning in this spot. Dallas is the more competent team right now.

Prediction: Cowboys 31, Eagles 21
