Danny Garcia vs. Jose Benavidez Jr.: Betting Preview, Odds, Picks & Prediction (2022)

The Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY will play host to a pair of elite-level welterweights, both of whom are desperate to get back to their winning ways following recent losses in Danny Garcia and Jose Benavidez Jr. Officially, this fight will be fought at super welterweight, as the fighters agree to the catchweight ahead of this one being announced.

Streamed in its entirety on Showtime, let’s take a closer look at this pair of heavy hitters ahead of next Saturday’s showdown in Brooklyn.

Danny Garcia (36-3-0, 21 KOs) vs. Jose Benavidez Jr. (27-1, 18 KOs)

A former WBA interim light welterweight title champion, Benavidez turned professional in 2010 and went on to TKO his first nine opponents inside of three rounds. While his power cooled as his opponents got better, Benavidez entered a 2018 WBO welterweight title fight against Terrence Crawford still undefeated, putting his “zero” on the line against one of the best to ever do it in the division.

After a strong start, Benavidez faded loaded before losing via TKO in the 12th and final round. Waiting three years in between fights, the last time we saw Benavidez in the ring as a majority draw in November against a relative no-name in Francisco Emanuel Torres.

On the other side of this matchup is another veteran in Danny Garcia, a likely Hall of Famer who is a former WBC welterweight and super lightweight champion.  Like Benavidez faced in his last fight, ring rust will be a concern for Garcia here, who hasn’t fought since December 2020.

In a fight that was for the WBC and IBF welterweight titles, Garcia lost to Errol Spence Jr. by unanimous decision. The only other losses of his career came against Shawn Porter and Keith Thurman, both for titles against legends of the division.

Bottom Line

By the accounts of many who follow the sport, Benavidez’s story is one of a guy who never really reached the pinnacle he was capable of. Despite his good record on paper, he’s lost to every high-caliber fighter put in front of him without fail, and I think we see that again here despite the ring rust we’re getting from Garcia.

While Benavidez might hang around early while Garcia gets his bearings, I think the right-handed jab and hook from Garcia ultimately win him this fight in the later rounds. I also look for Garcia to press late to end this one inside the distance, as he gets started on one final push for another title.

Pick: Danny Garcia to Win -200
