Denver Broncos vs. Los Angeles Chargers Odds and Game Pick (2020)

As the 2020 regular season is now just two weeks away from wrapping up, the Broncos and Chargers both sit in positions they hadn’t imagined, both 5-9 at the bottom of the AFC West. For the Chargers, a divisional win took 15 weeks, as last week they knocked off the Raiders 30-27 on the road.

The Broncos also have just one divisional win, a 31-30 win over this Chargers team back in early November.

With nothing more than pride and draft positioning on the line in this one, let’s take a closer look at where we can find an edge in this AFC West showdown.

Overview

Currently sitting with the third-worst point differential (-119) in the league, the Broncos have yet to be a favorite in any game this season. A touchdown to interception ratio of 14:13 from quarterback Drew Lock hasn’t helped, as questions continue to swirl if he’s truly the guy for the Broncos.

On the defensive side of the ball, linebacker Bradley Chubb and safety Justin Simmons were named to the Pro Bowl this week, coming as somewhat of a surprise for a defense that has been largely below average. Through 14 games, the Broncos have allowed 364.7 yards and 28.2 points per game, and have allowed 30 or more points in four of their last five.

When it comes to the Chargers’ quarterback situation, the team is much more confident they’ve found their guy. After stepping in as a starter in Week 2, rookie Justin Herbert has been somewhat inconsistent but has had an overall strong rookie campaign.

Through 13 games, Herbert has 3,781 yards and 27 touchdowns in the air, to go along with 199 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. On the defensive side of the ball, defensive end Joey Bosa has turned into one of the best pass rushers in the league but unfortunately has little help around him, as the Chargers have allowed 27.7 points this season to rank near the bottom of the league.

Trends

  • The Broncos are 7-2 ATS in their last nine at Chargers
  • The Under is 15-5-1 in Broncos last 21 vs. AFC West foes
  • The Chargers are 2-6 ATS over their last eight games

Prop Bet

1st Quarter Winner – Denver Broncos +130
With his job potentially on the line, I think we see a sense of urgency early from Locke in this one against a Chargers secondary susceptible to downfield strikes. While I’m not sure it’s sustainable, I think taking a flyer for the Broncos to go up early has some value here.

Bottom Line

Winners of their last two straight, the Chargers are getting increasingly healthy and seemingly every week Herbert gets more confidence at the helm. In addition to an edge at the quarterback position, the Chargers should get a big boost this week in the return of ex-Bronco (CB) Chris Harris Jr. His first season in Los Angeles has been riddled with injuries, but he’s as healthy heading into this one as he’s been all season and I think provides the spark the Chargers need to complete their longest win streak of the season.

Pick: Los Angeles Chargers -3
