Overview

The Lions got the win last week, thanks to the big leg of Matt Prater. Detroit is in an interesting situation this week, with Matthew Stafford suffering a thumb injury. As of Wednesday, Stafford is still not throwing at practice, and there is a chance he does not play. Detroit did, however, welcome receiver Kenny Golladay back to practice. He should be on the field Sunday, and Stafford did say he thinks he will play as well. Defensively, Detroit continues to struggle, allowing 5.9 yards per play. They also let Alex Smith have a career day last week.

The Panthers have a quarterback injury of their own, with Teddy Bridgewater tweaking his knee last week. As of Wednesday, Bridgewater has been limited. If he is unable to go, they have XFL star P.J. Walker backing him up. Walker is more than capable of doing everything Bridgewater can do. He is also familiar with this offense, playing under Matt Rhule in college. Christian McCaffrey has also been ruled out ahead of time, as he deals with a shoulder injury.

Defensively, the Panthers’ biggest weakness is the running game. They allow 4.8 yards per rushing attempt, which is the fourth-worst in the league. They also are unable to get pressure on opposing quarterbacks, sporting a league-worst 2.87% sack rate.

Trends

  • Detroit is 5-2 against the spread (ATS) in its last seven games against Carolina.
  • The total has hit the over in four of the last six games between Detroit and Carolina.
  • Carolina is 4-1 straight up in its last five home games against Detroit.

Prop Bet

All odds taken from FanDuel Sportsbook.

Panthers by 1-13 Pts (+165)

I’ll get into why I think the Panthers get the home win below. It is not likely to be a blowout, so taking this prop over the moneyline makes too much sense.

Bottom Line

Neither team has a defense that will scare you. Offensively, the Panthers have the edge, whether Teddy Bridgewater plays or not. In fact, they may be more dangerous with P.J. Walker, due to his running ability. With Detroit allowing 4.7 yards per carry, Mike Davis should finally find some success on the ground again. If the Panthers can establish the run, their passing game should make enough plays to hold the lead over the Lions.

Pick: Panthers -1.5
